Jon Stewart Burns Trump Over 1 Truly Curious Inauguration Moment
“Daily Show” host Jon Stewart called out Democratic figures for warning that President Donald Trump would be a fascist dictator, then taking part in all of the typical inauguration customs anyway, such as President Joe Biden welcoming him to the White House for a traditional tea.
“It’s always important to keep up the tea tradition when you hand over the keys to ― I’m sorry, what did you call him? ― Hitler!” Stewart said. “I’m not saying Biden should’ve done his own insurrection, but there’s gotta be a happy medium between storming the Capitol and ‘would you like a crumpet?’”
Stewart praised one prominent Democratic figure for dodging the ceremony.
“Only Michelle Obama seemed to have the consistent ethical stance of saying, ‘When they go low, I stay the fuck home,’” Stewart said.
Stewart also spotted one curious detail during the actual moment Trump was sworn in: He didn’t place his hand on either of the two Bibles held in front him as he repeated the oath of office.
“Trump didn’t actually put his hand on the Bible,” Stewart said. “Obviously because one or the other would burst into flames. Perhaps both.”
It’s not required that a president place a hand on the Bible, nor is the Bible itself required. However most ― but not all ― presidents have used one and placed a hand on it during the oath.
