Johnny Depp is weathered and grayed in a first look at Day Drinker, his upcoming thriller with frequent collaborator Penélope Cruz.

The actor is, aptly, holding a drink in the first image released by Lionsgate on Monday. From director Marc Webb and screenwriter Zach Dean, Day Drinker stars Madelyn Cline (Outer Banks, Knives Out 2) as a bartender on a private yacht who befriends an enigmatic, onboard guest (played by Depp). They soon find themselves entangled with a criminal figure (Cruz) and discover that they are connected in unexpected ways.

John Wick franchise producers Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee, along with Adam Kolbrenner, who worked on Free Guy and The Tomorrow War, are attached to produce the feature, which will also star Manu Ríos, Arón Piper, Juan Diego Botto, and Anika Boyle. It's Depp and Cruz's fourth feature together, having previously starred in BlowPirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, and Murder on the Orient Express.

Production has officially begun in Spain, Lionsgate announced. “I’m excited to be starting production with Johnny, Madelyn, Penelope, and this incredible cast,” said Webb, who is fresh off directing the Snow White live-action remake starring Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot. "We’re in a beautiful location with a fantastic crew and a thrilling, ferocious story to tell. This is gonna be fun.”

Day Drinker marks Depp's first major role in an American production following his highly-publicized defamation trial against ex-wife Amber Heard in 2022, in which a jury sided with Depp and found that Heard had defamed her ex-husband in a Washington Post op-ed about domestic violence that did not name the actor. Following a series of appeals, the case officially concluded in late 2022, with both parties settling their respective appeals.

Depp has been mounting a Hollywood comeback in the years since but with European-backed productions, starring in the 2023 French period drama Jeanne du Barry and directing the 2024 Italian drama Modì: Three Days on the Wing of Madness.
