John Mayer Goes ‘Beneath the Crystal Sky’ to Celebrate His Starry Audemars Piguet Watch Collaboration
Audemars Piguet hosted an event with John Mayer to celebrate the pair’s latest collaboration at a private residence on Tuesday in Bel Air, Calif.
The luxury Swiss watch brand teamed up with Mayer to create a new limited-edition iteration of the Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar timepiece, equipped with the manufacturer’s self-winding Calibre 5134. The new watch combines the traditional aesthetic of the classic Royal Oak with the addition of a perpetual calendar detail for a modern, technical feel. Mayer designed the timepiece himself, of which he took inspiration from the night sky. Fittingly, Mayer’s outdoor party, dubbed “Beneath the Crystal Sky” was held under the stars.

The event, which included a live DJ set courtesy of Questlove, a selection of watches on display and Mayer himself sporting the Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar, featured a star-studded guest list. Attendees included Zedd, Chris Stapleton, Finneas, Cole Walliser, Ginny Wright, Dominique Crenn, Maria Bello, Amir Esmailian aka Cash XO and Olivia Crouan, among others.
Mayer, who in addition to being a singer, songwriter and guitarist, is a longtime collector of watches, and applied his knowledge of the craft with his preference for design to work with Audemars Piguet on the 18-karat white gold timepiece. A majority of the watch’s new design centers around the piece’s picturesque dial, finished in a sparkling blue faux-crystal and adorned with an embossed night sky motif.
Chicago Bulls star Zach LaVine, one of the many guests present at Tuesday’s event, talked about his developing taste for luxury watches. “The first watch I got was my rookie year,” LaVine told WWD. “I ended up just buying one from a jeweler and my taste and education graduated from there.”
APL founders Ryan and Adam Goldston, both wearing Royal Oaks, were in good company among the timepiece aficionados. Adam recalled the moment he received his first dream watch — G-Shock, and it was love at first sight. “When I was a kid, I wanted a G-Shock so bad, and I remember begging my dad,” he said. “And then, finally for one of our birthdays, he gave me one.”
However as adults, the Goldston brothers found a new aspirational accessory in Audemars Piguet. “Truthfully, the story about our Royal Oaks — that’s the thing, that Ryan and I were motivated for. We always wanted to get yellow gold and Royal Oaks. To us, it’s like a symbol of ‘you’ve made it’ when you’re able to do something like that.”
