Jessica Plummer: "I guess my hair washday is kind of 24 hours!"
Here at The Cosmo Black Beauty Hub we absolutely do not gatekeep, so when we get a chance to quiz some of our favourite Black women about their go-to beauty products tips and treatments we don't hold back– after all, that's how our Little Black Beauty Book Franchise was born. All the tea on our favourite star's life in beauty, served hot.
This week we caught up with the Netflix Missing You star Jessica Plummer...
My Little Black Beauty Book: Jessica Plummer
What does Black beauty mean to you?
I think Black beauty is something that comes from within. It's a confidence and pride, to be unapologetically who you uniquely are.
What's your favourite beauty treatment?
I think, right now would have to be LED. It is so good for an array of things. I personally like it for controlling my pigmentation and helping to reduce inflammation. It's one of the first things I do in the morning, I just lay there for a zen ten minutes.

And do you have any aesthetic treatment recs?
In the past, I have really really struggled with my acne, and so have done a lot of chemical peels and microneedling which have both helped tremendously. I tend to do it in the winter, just because your skin will become more sensitive [in the summer] and I don't want to get sun damage.
What does your wash-day routine look like?
So for my wash day currently, I'm using a brand called Innersense which is new to me, but I'm really enjoying it. They have an incredible hair mask that I will actually style my hair with for the whole day and wash it out in the evening, or sometimes even the following morning and my hair is left so silky.
I'll start wash-day with a pre-shampoo, which I'll be using the shower on wet hair, just to help get it get out any tangles. I'm experiencing quite a lot of hair fall at the moment, so I want to reduce that as much as possible. Next, I'll go in with my shampoo and conditioner and then I'll use a hair mask which I'll leave in for a whole day. So yeah, I guess my hair washday is kind of 24 hours! I love it – self-care is my favourite thing to do.

Do you have a go-to salon?
I don't have a go-to but I am quite particular with who does my hair. Sometimes I'm even tempted to just buy scissors and do it myself. I feel like you've got to do your research and go by recommendations. I have a lovely gentleman who comes to my house if I do need a trim called Dan Martin.
Worst hair experience?
I actually can't blame it on a salon, it was my own fault. I went through a phase of highlighting my hair and I think I had blonde blindness and my hair was literally bleach blonde from root to end. Then on top of that, I was getting a weave!
This was just before I got pregnant with my daughter, and when I took out my weave, it was a hot mess. I was so depressed, I literally got scissors and just yakked at it, so then I would have to commit to the big chop. The following day, I went to the hairdressers and they literally shaved it all off, which is very liberating, and I definitely recommend do it at least once. It's amazing.
Skincare product you can’t live without?
It's annoying because it's a little bit pricey but it's the 111 Skin Anti-Blemish Booster. When you pat it in it feels like water as it absorbs really quick. There are three phases to a breakout; before the breakout comes, the breakout and then the healing afterwards. The ingredients in this particular product helps to combat all of those stages.

What about body treatment?
So another mum at my daughter's school has recently started her own massage company, and she was offering free massages because she needed to train. And now I am addicted. I feel like, if you don't already do this, treat yourself if you can, even if it's just for 20 minutes.
What is your biggest beauty splurge?
Beauty is my splurge! If my money is going on anything, it's going to be close between beauty and travel, but beauty is really up there.
What about your cheapest beauty obsession?
My cheapest beauty obsession is by a brand called O'Keeffe's and they specialise in really heavy-duty moisturising products. They have a really good balm for your heels, hand cream and I really love their lip balm. It's really thick and it's not jazzy– it doesn't smell nice or anything, but it does the job, especially winter.

Any makeup mishaps?
God, so many! I remember once I wore a yellow lipstick. It was when I was in a girl band called Neon Jungle and it was all about just experimenting in any which way we could, be in our hair or make up or our clothes.
What would your makeup bag not be the same without?
Oh, it's really hard between lipstick and mascara. Even if I'm just doing the school run. Dior do this really gorgeous matte, but velvety, silky texture lipstick I probably wear it every day. It's the shade 300. The mascara I'm obsessed with right now is Lancôme.
