Jessica Chastain & Adam Driver Star In ‘The Dealer’ Drama Series Ordered By Apple From Media Res
EXCLUSIVE: In a very competitive situation, Apple TV+ has landed The Dealer, a Media Res drama starring Oscar winner Jessica Chastain and Oscar nominee Adam Driver, with a straight-to-series order.
The Dealer is executive produced by the A Doll’s House, Part 2 trio of Sam Gold, Lucas Hnath and Sarah Lunnie. Written by Hnath and to be directed by Gold, The Dealer is described as a biting exploration of power, class, seduction and culture set inside the glittering world of the high-end art market, told through the eyes of an aspiring super gallerist, played by Jessica Chastain, and the tangled relationship with her most gifted and unnerving artist, played by Adam Driver.

Also executive producing The Dealer are Michael Ellenberg and Lindsey Springer for Media Res, Chastain and Kelly Carmichael for Freckle Films, Driver and Alan Poul (Six Feet Under). Arianna Anderson will serve as co-executive producer on the project, which fits into Apple TV+’s slate dominated by star-driven series.
This marks Media Res’ fourth series for Apple, following the Emmy- and SAG Award-winning drama The Morning Show, which is headed into its fourth season, Pachinko and Extrapolations.
It also marks the fourth high-profile sale for the company over the last few months. Media Res recently set up The Band, an hourlong dramedy series starring Ben Stiller, at HBO and also has bisexual romance drama Enigma Variations starring Jeremy Allen White at Netflix. After a bidding war, its Silicon Valley thriller Thumblite, starring Rosamund Pike, landed at Netflix in September with a straight-to-series order. Coming up is The Miniature Wife series at Peacock, starring Matthew Macfadyen.
Gold is a theater director who won the Best Direction of a Musical Tony Award in 2015 for Fun House. He, Hnath and Hnath’s long-time collaborator Lunnie worked together on A Doll’s House, Part 2, a play written by Hnath, directed by Gold and dramaturged by Lunnie. It earned Gold and Hnath Tony nominations in 2017, with its star Laurie Metcalf winning the award for Actress in a Leading Role in a Play. Lunnie also served as dramaturg for the Broadway production of Hnath’s play Hillary & Clinton.
This marks Chastain’s second series for Apple TV+ — she stars in and executive produces through Freckle Films the upcoming limited series The Savant — and for Media Res where she previously starred and executive produced in its HBO limited series Scenes From A Marriage. In addition to The Savant, Chastain will next be seen in the movie Lear Rex. An Oscar winner for The Eyes Of Tammy Faye, an Oscar nominee for Zero Dark Thirty and an Emmy nominee for George & Tammy, Chastain is repped by CAA and Mosaic.
The Dealer is only the second major TV series role for Driver following his breakout turn on HBO’s Girls. In features, he recently starred in Megalopolis and will next be seen in Father, Mother, Sister, Brother. Driver, an Oscar nominee for Marriage Story and BlacKkKlansman, is repped by WME.
