Jennifer Stone recalls 'messy high school nonsense' between Miley Cyrus and Selena Gomez during Disney days

The "Wizards of Waverly Place" and "Hannah Montana" stars both dated fellow Disney Channel alum, Nick Jonas.

Even Hollywood sets have their share of high school drama — at least according to Wizards of Waverly Place alum, Jennifer Stone.

The actress, who hosts a rewatch podcast of the Disney Channel series with former costar David DeLuise, recently revisited the infamous crossover episode, Wizards on Deck with Hannah Montana, which united the teenage stars of Hannah Montana, Wizards of Waverly Place and The Suite Life on Deck. Despite plenty of intermingling amongst the three shows, fans might recall that two of Disney’s biggest stars, Selena Gomez and Miley Cyrus, never crossed paths onscreen — and Stone knows why.

While reflecting on the crossover episode, DeLuise broached the subject with Stone. “Did they not get along during that shoot or something?,” he asked of Gomez and Cyrus, who were both 17 at the time.

“They intermittently got along,” Stone replied, before adding, “I mean, come on. It was, like, high school. They both dated Nick [Jonas]. I think Miley dated him first and then Selena dated him, and then it was it was just messy high school nonsense."

As Stone noted, both actresses dated the youngest Jonas Brother during their time as stars of the network. He was first connected with Cyrus in 2006 but the couple were broken up by the end of 2007, Cyrus later confirmed to Seventeen. He was later rumored to be dating Gomez in 2008. The pair had an on-again-off-again-relationship before calling it quits in 2010.

Of the actresses' current relationship, Stone added, “They're fine now. They're all good now. But, yeah, it was high school just BS.”

Representatives for Cyrus and Gomez did not immediately respond to Entertainment Weekly’s request for comment.

Whatever tension existed between the two former child stars was apparently short-lived. In 2016, Gomez outright denied that there was ever a serious conflict.

“We never feuded,” Gomez told W of her relationship with Cyrus. “We both liked the same guy when we were 16.”

She added, “It was just a Hilary Duff–Lindsay Lohan thing: ‘Oh, my God, we like the same boy!’ We are now completely settled in our own lives.”

The duo — who are also friendly on social media — reconnected in 2020, when Gomez appeared on Cyrus’ Instagram Live talk show Bright Minded, which she hosted throughout the COVID-19 lockdown. The Only Murders in the Building star used the appearance to open up about her bipolar disorder diagnosis.

Further proving that no bad blood remains between them, Gomez in 2023 celebrated on social media when both artists dropped new singles on the same day.

"@mileycyrus and I both have a SINGLE SOON and we are releasing on the same day," she wrote in a now-expired Instagram Story. "We have been friends since we USED TO BE YOUNG. Excited for August 25!!!"

As for their respective love lives, Gomez last year confirmed her relationship with Benny Blanco while Cyrus has been linked with drummer Maxx Morando since 2021.
