Jennifer Hudson and Common at New York Knicks gameJennifer Hudson once famously sang about hitting someone with her pocketbook — and she might now have her trusty clutch’s sights set on an NBA star after she was hit in the face by a stray ball at a recent game.
The talk show host and EGOT-winning entertainer, 43, attended a New York Knicks game Tuesday at Madison Square Garden in Manhattan with her partner, 52-year-old rapper Common — both of whom interacted with the matchup in an unexpected way.
Amid the action, Knicks player Miles McBride pursued a ball that flew sideways and struck Hudson in the side of the head, knocking her glasses off her face. Common’s instincts kicked in as his right hand shot up to deflect the ball, hitting it upwards shortly after it hit Hudson.
In footage from the game’s live broadcast, Common puts his arms around Hudson in the aftermath, and McBride briefly speaks with the pair before continuing the game.
“Protect Jennifer Hudson!” one of the TV commentators at the game said, while another added: “Oh, no. Not the glasses! Those look real expensive.”
Entertainment Weekly has reached out to representatives for Hudson for comment.
Hudson and Common have been in a relationship since 2022, with the Dreamgirls actress playfully grilling her boyfriend about marriage on the set of her self-titled talk show in October 2024.

"I heard you’ve been even out there talking about marriage," said Hudson at the time. "What’s that about?”
