Jenna Bush Hager Says Her Dad 'Turned Red' After Interaction With Her Ex-Boyfriend

When meeting an important figure, like a president or governor, it’s customary to address them by their position. In the same vein, it’s considered good manners to address the parents of the person that you’re dating with a respectful name.

Unfortunately for Jenna Bush Hager, her ex-boyfriend did neither of those things when speaking to her father, former president George W. Bush.

The Today show host detailed the story on the Feb. 17 episode of the NBC program, explaining to NBC correspondent Willie Geist that she “had a boyfriend in high school who called my dad ‘Big George’ once.”

As detailed by People, Geist was shocked, asking, “he did? How long did that last?”

Though perhaps one would expect Bush Hager to say that the relationship ended right away after he gave the then Texas governor an extremely informal nickname, she explained that “he lasted a long time because he was handsome.”

Though her father “turned red” at the nickname, Bush Hager said, “you know when you’re in those moments — it only works when you’re young, because when you’re in those moments, you're like, ‘oh god, this is not good.’ But you can somewhat brush it over.”

Geist couldn’t seem to believe the interaction, stating, “your dad was also governor at that time. He was governor of Texas and some teenager is going, ‘what’s up, Big George?’ I’m impressed he lasted.”

The relationship has since fizzled out, and Bush Hager ended up with someone who likely referred to her father as “sir” or “Mr. President” at first, given that he was his boss.
