2025 Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild Awards Voting Period Delayed Due to L.A. Fires – Film News in Brief

The Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild (MUAHS, IATSE Local 706) has announced that they will delay the voting start date for their 12th Annual MUAHS Guild Awards by one week, now set for Friday, Jan. 17.

According to a press release, the decision to delay the voting period was made in light of the recent Los Angeles fire disasters which have affected many members of the guild.

“Due to the devastating fires in the Los Angeles area, many members of the MUAHS Guild have been forced to evacuate their homes and studios. In order to support these members and give them the opportunity to fully participate in the awards, the voting date has been extended to January 17,” said MUAHS President Julie Socash.

“We are committed to supporting our members and all MUAHS Awards nominees and ensuring that all deserving artists have the chance to be recognized for their hard work and talent. The guild looks forward to celebrating the best in Make-Up & Hair Styling and honoring the resilience of its members during this challenging time.”

Final MUAHS Awards online voting will begin on Friday, Jan. 17 and close on Sunday, Feb. 9.  Winners will be announced at the MUAHS Awards Gala on Saturday, Feb. 15.

Terry Moore’s Final Film “Silent Life: The Story of the Lady in Black” to Play at Beaufort International Film Festival

“Silent Life: The Story of the Lady in Black,” the final film of Academy-Award nominee Terry Moore’s career, is set to make its North American premiere at the Beaufort International Film on Feb. 18.

The movie’s cast also includes Isabella Rossellini, Franco Nero, Sherilyn Fenn, Paul Rodriguez, Monte Markham, Jeff DuJardin and Vladislav Alex Kozlov.

“Silent Life: The Story of the Lady in Black” debuted this past year at Sedona International Film Festival, winning the Best Indie Spirit Award. It went on to earn the Silver Remi Award for Best Drama Feature at the Worldfest Houston Film Festival as well as the Best Feature Film at the Rhode Island International Film Festival, in addition to a Best Achievement Award honor for Moore.

The script for “Silent Life: The Story of the Lady in Black” was penned by Kozlov alongside co-writers Natalia Dar and Ksenia Jarova. Kozlov and Dar also produced the film for Dreamer Pictures with Dmitriy Pristanskov, Yuri Ponomarev and Max Kholin. Jay Boileau, Yogu Kanthiah and Tyler Cassity produced through their Hollywood Forever banner. David Roberson served as associate producer.

Janelle Monáe Selected as CDGA Vanguard Spotlight Award Recipient

The Costume Designers Guild is set to honor Janelle Monáe as the recipient of the Vanguard Spotlight Award at the Costume Designers Guild Awards (CDGA).

“Celebrating a trailblazer who ignites the imaginations of cognoscenti and audiences alike, the Costume Designers Guild Vanguard Spotlight Award is a tribute to a performing artist who sets new standards in their arena, not only for their outstanding achievements but also for their courage as a visionary that serves as an inspiration to us all,” reads the award’s description.

The Grammy-nominated singer will be the second recipient of the award in history. Billie Eilish was the inaugural winner this past year.

The Guild announced the list of nominees across nine categories on Dec. 13. Now in its 27th year, the CDGA will also recognize honorees such as Zoe Saldaña, Jenny Beavan and Salvador Perez during this year’s ceremony. The awards are scheduled to take place on Feb. 6 at The Ebell of Los Angeles.

Western Costume will serve as a premiere sponsor for the event once again.

In Real Life Movies Acquires Distribution Rights to Documentary ‘The Thinking Game’

Greg Kohs’ “The Thinking Game” has been picked up for distribution by In Real Life Movies and is set to play in over 50 cinemas worldwide starting Feb. 2.

“The Thinking Game” premiered at the 2024 Tribeca Festival and follows the life of scientist and Nobel Prize laureate Demis Hassabis, capturing moments of historic breakthrough in the creation of a prominent AI lab.

The In Real Life (IRL) Movie Club is a non-profit film organization that is grassroots and community-driven, designed to support documentary films and provide intimate screenings different from traditional Q&As.

“‘The Thinking Game’ is a perfect film for our next movie release,” Annie Roney, IRL Movie Club Board President commented. “With a packed house, and standing ovations at Tribeca’s largest theater, we know that the film resonates with audiences. It’s exceedingly rare that filmmakers happen to be in the room when a discovery is made that will most certainly alter the trajectory of humankind, and the natural world we inhabit.”

Reba McEntire to Adapt NYT-Bestselling Novel “The All-Girl Filling Station’s Last Reunion” for the Screen

Reba McEntire is set to both star in and produce a feature for Wonder Project. The film will be a screen adaptation of the the Fannie Flagg’s New York Times bestselling novel “The All-Girl Filling Station’s Last Reunion.”

“In this film from Wonder Project based on ‘The All-Girl Filling Station’s Last Reunion,’ Mrs. Sookie Poole of Point Clear, Alabama, has just married off her daughter and is looking forward to relaxing. The only thing left to contend with is her domineering mother, the formidable 90-year-old Lenore Simmons Krackenberry, who is obsessed with family lineage and Southern heritage. But when Sookie receives a series of mysterious letters that suggest that she’s adopted, she gets sent down a rabbit hole of self-discovery, ultimately uncovering the swashbuckling story of Fritzi Jurdabralinski and her sisters, a daring group of women who ran the first All Girl Filling Station during WWII and ultimately became the first female Air Force pilots,” reads the film’s logline.

Academy Award winner Callie Khouri will direct and produce the project. Tony Award nominated playwright Bekah Brunstetter will write the script. Ben Howard of Third Coast Content will serve as executive producer alongside Jeremy Latcham as producer for Wonder Project.

“I’ve always been a fan of Fannie Flagg and her writing, and it’s been an honor to call her my friend for the past decade. I cannot wait to work with this incredible team to bring another one of her special stories to life on the big screen,” said Reba McEntire.

Inside Out 2′ Named Inaugural Greater Good Film of the Year by Greater Good Science Center at UC Berkeley

Disney and Pixar’s 2024 animated sequel “Inside Out 2” has been named as the inaugural recipient of the Greater Good Film of the Year award, which was established at UC Berkeley to “annually recognize the motion picture whose narrative has done the most to advance societal well-being.”

Inside Out 2 is more than just an animated film—it’s a profound and timely exploration of the emotional challenges young people face, from self-doubt to anxiety,” says Jason Marsh, the Greater Good Science Center (GGSC)’s executive director.

“It provides a powerful tool for parents, educators, and therapists to spark meaningful conversations about emotions and mental health, while also encouraging greater empathy and connection across generations.”

Based at UC Berkeley, The GGSC studies psychology, sociology, and neuroscience relating to mental and physical well-being. GGSC faculty director Dacher Keltner, served as one of the scientific advisors on “Inside Out 2.”
