Jana Kramer is opening up about her experience with — and without — prenups.

In a Sept. 25 episode of I Do, Part 2 with Jennie Garth, Amy Robach and T.J. Holmes, the One Tree Hill alum revealed that she lost half of her money while divorcing ex Mike Caussin — all because she didn't have a prenup in place.

"In my last marriage, to my husband of almost seven years, I did not have him sign a prenup," Kramer, 40, said. "To me it was, 'This is my one, forever, and we're getting married."

She added, "When he cheated, the first round of affairs when he was in rehab, I made him sign a postnup. But that did not hold up in court."

When Kramer was going through the divorce process, her lawyer told her that postnups "don't hold up as well" as prenups. At that point, she decided to make a spreadsheet with what she thought was fair — but he was ready to fight it.

"I earned most of the money in that relationship," she said, later noting that she also pays him child support.

When Kramer got engaged to now-husband Allan Russell, her lawyers sat her down to discuss a prenup and said it was like "getting health insurance." Still, it was a "really hard conversation to have."

"He's the love of my life, and I don't want to have a prenup," she explained. "Having said that, I look at the other side and I realize I lost almost half of my money in my last divorce. Money that I worked really hard for."

When she spoke to Russell about it, he said "I will sign it if you want me to sign it."

"I'm not gonna actually say what the end decision was but for me it was a really tough conversation to have," she concluded.

Kramer filed for divorce from Caussin, 37, in 2021, citing adultery and inappropriate marital conduct. They welcomed daughter Jolie Rae in January 2016 and son Jace Joseph in November 2018.

Since their divorce was finalized in 2021, the exes have talked about their journey with co-parenting.

"We're doing a really good job and I'm really proud of how we're able to co-parent," Kramer told PEOPLE in 2023. "I think the first year was really tough, but I think now we're able to put our issues aside and then just come together for the kids because, at the end of the day, they're the most important things to us."

Kramer released her latest single, "Warrior," on Sept. 13 and told PEOPLE that she wrote the track for Russell.

"I just wanted to write him a song to basically be like, 'Thank you for just being the most wonderful man and for coming into my life,'" said Kramer, who welcomed a son, Roman, with Russell in November 2023. "He calls me his little warrior, and I just kept seeing the title 'Warrior.'"

She added: "I've been in crisis mode for so many years, and now I get to be happy and have love in my life and it's a beautiful place to be."
