Jacob Batalon 'Did Not Know' About Tom Holland’s Plans to Propose to Zendaya, Jokes 'I Thought About it First'

Jacob Batalon wants to set the record straight.

The actor, 28, and his Spider-Man costar Tom Holland got engaged to their respective partners within two months of each other – but Batalon claims he had his plans set in stone first.

Batalon revealed that he popped the question to his girlfriend Veronica Leahov on March 5, while sources confirmed on Jan. 6. that Holland and Zendaya, both 28, were engaged.

The Reginald the Vampire star was asked about the timing in a recent interview with Metro Entertainment, during which he said the two did not know of each other’s plans.

"No, we did not know about each other's plans like that," Batalon told the outlet. "But I will say I thought about it first."

The actor made his Marvel debut as Ned Leeds in 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming, which features Holland as the titular superhero and Zendaya as Michelle "MJ" Jones-Watson. He reprised his role in Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, Spider-Man: Far From Home and Spider-Man: No Way Home.

On Monday, March 10, Batalon told Entertainment Tonight at the Los Angeles premiere of his new film Novocaine that he and Leahov are "just enjoying the engagement right now.” However, he noted that his fiancée wants them to jet off to Italy's Lake Como for their big day.

The groom-to-be also shared his own wedding must-haves regarding food and attire. "I mean, some adobo for sure," he said. "And then maybe some like — I kind of want to wear Aloha shirts instead of a tuxedo."

As for Holland and Zendaya’s engagement, a source told PEOPLE after the news broke that "everyone close to them knew an engagement was happening,” but did not know when. The insider added that Holland shared the big news around New Year's.

In a Jan. 10 Patreon post, Holland's father Dominic Holland discussed their engagement.

"Tom, as you know by now, was very incredibly well prepared," he wrote of his son. "He had purchased a ring. He had spoken with her father and gained permission to propose to his daughter. Tom had everything planned out… When, where, how, what to say, what to wear."
