Is The Idea of You based on Harry Styles? Here's what we know about the R-rated flick

Anne Hathaway has everyone talking and it's got nothing to do with a pair of Chanel boots! The 41-year-old Oscar winner has a new movie coming out and it looks to be saucy AF judging by the trailer that just dropped.

In The Idea of You, Anne stars as a mother who chaperones her teenage daughter to Coachella and ends up meeting a rather famous (and much younger) boy band singer named Hayes (played by Nicholas Galitzine). As they begin a whirlwind romance, it isn’t long before Hayes’ superstar status poses unavoidable challenges to their relationship, and Solène soon discovers that life in the glare of his spotlight might be more than she bargained for.

Of course, the internet quickly exploded with the conjecture that the movie is something of a Harry Styles biopic that details his relationship with Olivia Wilde (who was nine years older than him when they dated) and, man, people were LOVING this theory (which, for the record, is not entirely inaccurate).

"The Idea Of You (2024) seems like Harry Styles/Olivia Wilde AU fan fiction," one person wrote.

"The trailer for The Idea Of You is very ehm...h*rny..." another person noted. "Also, dear lord we're in the One Direction/Harry Styles fanfic to movie era, aren't we?"

"My issue with The Idea Of You is that it’s not even subtle," said someone else. "I am not going to be able to put blinders on and just enjoy it I am going to be cognizant that it’s a Harry Styles fanfic the whole time. And like the thing is the man does canonically love an older woman."

Is The Idea of You based on Harry Styles?

Well, the answer is yes... and no. The film is based on a 2017 book of the same name by Robinne Lee. The book was a huge success and Robinne ended up chatting to Vogue about it saying, “This was never supposed to be a book about Harry Styles.

"Nor was it ever intended as a classic, fuzzy romance. It was supposed to be a story about a woman approaching 40 and reclaiming her sexuality and rediscovering herself, just at the point that society traditionally writes women off as desirable and viable and whole.”

She makes an excellent point but then how do you explain the fact that Harry Styles and Hayes Campbell have the same tattoos and look and sound very similar?

Robinne has admitted that Harry certainly played a part in sparking her imagination (although she told Vogue that 'inspired' was a strong word) but he was one of many people and ideas that led to the finished product.

As it turns out, the author had previously been in a relationship with a younger man of her own and had spent six years writing a semi-autobiographical novel about it.

What does Nicholas Galitzine say about the Harry Styles comparison?

Speaking to Buzzfeed UK, Nicholas said of the comparison, “We tried to create a character that felt maybe akin to Harry in the sense that Harry is a younger man dating an older woman.
