The internet is not pleased with Trevor Noah's jokes at the Grammys tonight.
The former Daily Show star also hosted the Grammys last year. He was widely praised for his Taylor Swift jokes following the Jo Koy hosting debacle at the Golden Globes. People loved how Trevor made people laugh while still being respectful.
So, people seemed to be surprised and disappointed that some of Trevor's jokes didn't land tonight. During his opening monologue, he spoke about the people who vote for the Grammy winners, joking that they comprise of "13,000 members of the Recording Academy and 20 million illegal immigrants." Personally, I believe he was mocking the Trump administration's stance on immigration — I don't believe he was genuinely echoing it!
Grammy winner (!!) Doechii noticeably rolled her eyes after this joke.
He also said, "Three-time Grammy winner Shakira is in the house. The greatest thing out of Colombia that isn’t a felony."
Now, Trevor has been outspoken about politics for a long time, and that's why I believe he was pointing out the new administration's rhetoric rather than endorsing it. He also made a joke specifically about Trump's new tariffs and said, "There’s been a few changes in Washington. So I’m gonna enjoy tonight because this may be my last time I get to host anything in this country."
Even so, social media was not happy, and Trevor soon started trending on X (formerly Twitter). Here's what people are saying:
