Meghan Markle’s decision to have the engagement ring she was gifted by Prince Harry completely redesigned has been a divisive one to say the least.

And while the reason behind the duchess’ change of heart remains unknown, one new report has suggested it was a difference in taste between the couple.

“There’s no denying that Harry was offended when Meghan told him she was planning to update the ring,” a source close to the pair told Star.

“He put so much thought and effort into the design and didn’t understand why she wanted to change it.”

The new look

The Duchess of Sussex turned heads after debuting her updated bling at Trooping the Colour, which featured a new diamond band in place of the white gold ring picked out by Harry.

She also showed off a new eternity ring, which is believed to have been gifted by Harry to mark the birth of little Archie as well as the couple’s first anniversary.

However, the switch up was a divisive move for royal watchers, with one saying the ring is something to be treasured and shouldn’t be modified.

"I find it a bit odd Meghan would want to alter a ring that her husband had especially designed for her," editor-in-chief of Majesty Magazine, Ingrid Seward told The Sun.

"A royal engagement ring is a piece of history not a bit of jewellery to be updated when it looks old fashioned."

Custom-made

Compounding the controversy was the proud comments Harry made after the couple announced their engagement, where the prince revealed he designed the ring himself.

“The ring is - is obviously yellow gold because that's her favourite - and the main stone itself I sourced from Botswana,” Harry said in his first interview with Meghan to the BBC.

The ring’s impressive centre stone is from Botswana – a place that holds special meaning for the couple after they camped there together early in their relationship.

Harry also made sure to include a tribute to his mum in Meghan’s ring.

“The little diamonds either side are from my mother's jewellery collection to make sure that she's with us on this - on this crazy journey together,” he said at the time.
