Inside Trentman House, the $4.2 Million Georgetown Residence by a Famed Modernist Architect

As the U.S. capital’s first historic district, Georgetown is home to a number of Colonial-style homes, including one lived in by former president John F. Kennedy. Another neighborhood townhouse stands out from the pack, though, with its original design plans preserved at the Library of Congress. Built in 1968, the award-winning Trentman House can now be yours for $4.2 million. Jeff Lockard and Andrew Smith of Sotheby’s International Realty hold the listing.

The contemporary residence on tree-lined 27th Street NW was designed by acclaimed late architect and Georgetown resident Hugh Newell Jacobsen, a.k.a. the man behind historic renovations of the U.S. Capitol and the Smithsonian’s Arts & Industries Building. Records show it was originally built for Stephen Trentman and his wife, hence the name. Jacobsen honored its historic surroundings by aligning its scale with neighboring homes while also implementing unique features such as two skylight-capped cylinders at the center of the home that funnel light down into the lower floors and house a pair of circular staircases. No doubt the trio of all-glass bay windows with views of Rose Park helped win the abode its AIA Honor Award and Architectural Record’s #1 Award of Excellence for House Design, too.

“The Trentman House exemplifies Hugh Newell Jacobsen’s genius in blending modern architectural innovation with the timeless elegance of Georgetown’s historic landscape,” Lockard shares in a statement. “This residence remains an extraordinary example of how architecture can both honor and innovate within its surroundings.”

The abode’s red-brick façade pops against the three oversized bay windows plus a smaller series of rectangular-shaped casings above. A stone pathway leads to the arched front door, where an A.I.A. plaque distinguishes the home. Beyond the foyer’s stone flooring, an elevator services all four stories of the home, which spans 3,124 square feet with four bedrooms and three bathrooms, plus two powder rooms. But if you’d rather get your steps in, take the winding wooden stairs up to the main living area.

Built-in shelving and a fireplace add interest to the living room, but its most alluring feature might be its floor-to-ceiling windows, one of which slides open to access the landscaped backyard, which includes a koi pond. At the front of the house, an all-white galley kitchen equipped with Meile appliances sits side by side with the dining room. There are two en suite guest bedrooms on the third floor, while the spacious primary suite presides over the entire top floor and features Spanish porcelain tiles in the bathroom. The fourth bedroom is tucked behind the single-car garage on the ground floor, along with a laundry room.
