Inside St. Vincent’s ‘90s Minimalist Glam for the 2025 Grammys
The art-rock star paired the look with an archival Armani suit originally worn by Christy Turlington.
Last night, Annie Clark, known as St. Vincent, opened the 2025 Grammys alongside a group of musicians joining folk rock band Dawes for a cover of Randy Newman’s “I Love L.A.” In the wake of the devastation caused by the California wildfires, it was an uplifting tribute to the award show’s home.
“It’s always a tremendous honor to be asked to perform at the Grammys, but this year is extra special in that I’m performing as part of a tribute to the resilience of Los Angeles,” Clark told InStyle while getting ready for the show. “In addition to being proud to be able to do anything to celebrate the city I now call home, it’s been especially fun getting to play with some great musicians.”
The ceremony not only saw Clark honoring the city she loves but she also took home three Grammys. In the alternative rock category, she won Best Rock Song for “Broken Man,” Best Alternative Performance for “Flea,” and Best Alternative Album for All Born Screaming.
Looking as sharp as ever in Armani, Clark drew inspiration from All Born Screaming as she crafted her look for her big night.
“We set out to recreate an iconic ‘90s Armani look, as the album’s aesthetic draws heavily from ‘90s office wear—something Mr. Armani has mastered like no other,” says Clark. “After exploring the archives, we selected a 1991 ensemble originally worn by Christy Turlington and had it remade.”
This vision seamlessly translated into Clark’s accompanying beauty look. As her makeup artist Hinako explains, “With each new album, [Annie] creates a unique world and style that reflects the music.” For All Born Screaming, that meant capturing “strength, inner beauty, and confidence, all while maintaining a sense of femininity.”
For Hinako, the foundation of any great look starts with a healthy complexion. “It elevates everything,” she explains. “With Annie, less is more. She’s naturally beautiful, so I keep the makeup light, emphasizing her skin and eyes.” The pro‘s holy grail skin-enhancer was Armani Beauty’s Luminous Silk Perfect Natural Glow Foundation. “My trick is to apply the foundation little by little, in thin layers, to create a lush, effortless glow,” says Hinako. A soft-focus wash of peach along the eyes and cheeks was achieved with Luminous Silk Cheek Tint in Rosy Peach and Fluid Sheer Glow in Champagne, with a touch of contour added using Luminous Silk Creamy Bronzing Powder in Golden Sunrays. And her lip combo? A special cocktail of Lip Power in matte Dark Mauve and satin Intimate.
It‘s true; you can never go wrong in a ’90s Armani suit. But leave it to Clark to level up the look with fresh, perfectly attuned makeup.
