‘House Of The Dragon’s Matt Smith Gently Corrects Interviewer Over Emma D’Arcy Pronoun Blunder

Matt Smith is winning praise from the LGBTQ+ community over the way he subtly corrected a presenter who mistakenly misgendered his House of the Dragon co-star Emma D’Arcy.

Smith was interviewed by Sue Perkins, host of Sky’s official fan show House of the Dragon: War Room, at the London premiere of Season 2.

Perkins referenced an earlier interview she had done with D’Arcy and explained that “she gave you all the credit” for the final scene in Season 1, in which Rhaenyra Targaryen is informed by Daemon about the death of her son Lucerys.

D’Arcy’s preferred pronouns are they/them, which Smith repeated back to Perkins when he answered her question. “I can’t take the credit, [but] I have to say, aren’t they brilliant?” he said.

Smith added: “They are absolutely brilliant and you’re in for a real treat with Emma this year, I think Emma’s put in… a really great performance.”

D’Arcy has previously spoken about their identity and fashion choices in an interview with Highsnobiety.

“Clothing, for most people, is central to who they are and how they express themselves. But for gender-fluid or trans people, clothes play an even more fundamental role,” they said.

“I’m trans-masc presenting person, and broadly, my instinct is to wear rigid shapes softly. I used to be more into texture, but now I’m gradually getting more into bright colors.”

House of the Dragon premieres on HBO on June 16.
