The conversation started after Kotb and Jarrett were discussing the recent viral moment in which Spider-Man: No Way Home star Tom Holland created distance between his girlfriend, Zendaya, and members of the paparazzi after they got too close to the Challengers actress on a crowded sidewalk.
“She didn’t need ‘rescuing’ but did need someone to say ‘come on, I’ve got you,’” said Jarrett. Kotb then shared that her view of men has been shaped since childhood because her father “was always uber polite, to a point where my mother, I didn’t know she could touch a door handle, he did it every time.”
Kotb continued explaining her father’s chivalry, sharing that it wasn’t “because she couldn’t, but because he was saying ‘after you.’ And whenever we would go out to the car, he would go around to her side” and open the door for her mother.
“You just want someone who sees you,” said Kotb. Jarrett agreed, noting that “nowadays it stands out more because everything’s so casual, so when someone does do that you perk up a little bit.”
“I think that’s one of my absolutes,” said Kotb. “Without that, then it’s like, that’s not happening.”
She went on, explaining that “if someone is like ‘I’ll meet you,’ he’s walking in front of you, any of those things,” and giggled as Jarrett turned to the camera and said “word to the wise, you heard it here. If you want a date with Hoda, you better come around that car.”
