Hillary Clinton Pays Homage to Early 1900s Suffragettes in White Jacket at ‘Suffs’ Broadway Premiere

Hillary Clinton made another appearance in New York City on Thursday night. The former United States Secretary of State attended the red carpet opening night of the new musical “Suffs,” which debuted at The Music Box Theatre on Broadway.

For the premiere, Clinton paid homage to suffragettes of the early 20th century by wearing a white jacket. The long-sleeve jacket featured three pearl buttons. Clinton’s choice of jewelry accessories complimented the pearl button detailing. She wore a string of pearls necklace and a pair of pearl earrings.

The former first lady opted for black-and-white coloring blocking for the rest of her ensemble, choosing to wear black paints with a pair of black pointed toe shoes. The significance of Clinton’s white jacket holds a deeply historic meaning. Suffragettes in the early 1900s chose the colors purple, green and white to represent their cause. Purple was associated with royalty, white with purity and green with hope.

This is only the latest look this week where a Broadway show has inspired Clinton’s sartorial statement. On Wednesday night, the American political figure attended the opening night of “The Wiz” Broadway revival. At the event, Clinton was photographed wearing a gold jacket, taking a cue from the show’s yellow brick road. She also accessorized the look with a complementary yellow scarf.

Prior to her trip to New York City, Clinton spent time in Washington, D.C., for the White House State Dinner for Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and his wife Yuko Kishida on April 10. Clinton’s ensemble for the formal occasion also played with elements of gold, featuring the color as a decorative element of her pink and plum caftan.

“Suffs” is a new Broadway musical with book, music and lyrics by Shaina Taub. The musical relays the historic events of the early 1900s suffragist movement until the ratification of the 19th amendment to the U.S. constitution in 1920, which guarantees women the right to vote.
