Amelia Phillip's running tips

The countdown is on, your big day is fast approaching, so what's some last minute advice?

Nothing new on race day:
I’ve seen it happen, new shoes causing blisters, a tight tank leading to chaffing. Don’t try, use or do anything new on race day. For example an energy gel containing caffeine may cause stomach cramps if you’re not used to it, an unusual meal the night before can also cause havoc.

Keep track of your pace:
It’s easy to get swept up in the excitement of the race and set off too fast, only to crash and burn at the other end. Know your goal race time, work out your pace per km and use a smart watch to keep track. I’m loving my Apple Watch as it shows my current pace as well as average pace (plus I play my rocking tunes through it!).

Double tie your shoe laces:
One common cause of running injuries is tripping over laces and blisters caused by shoe slippage. To avoid both, tie your laces up snugly, double knot them and most importantly tuck in any loose laces, it’s so easy to catch a toe on those pesky loops.

Plan you're nervous pee:
Even if you don’t think you need to pee – you will! The loo queue may take as long as 20 minutes, so get to the start nice and early and line up for the loo!

Mind over matter:
Your headspace can make or break your run. Even with precision planning, things can go wrong. Use an uplifting running mantra to ward off negative thoughts and keep your mind in a positive place. Pick two-four motivating words that you can repeat in your head whenever your thoughts drift.
