Hayley Erbert wraps dance tour and reflects on health emergency: 'So grateful to still be here'

"When there were talks of resuming the tour a few months later, there was so much uncertainty around it for me. But I DID IT!" she wrote.

Hayley Erbert is reflecting — and celebrating! — after wrapping up the Symphony of Dance tour with her husband Derek Hough five months after her emergency craniectomy.

On Thursday, four days after the tour ended, Erbert shared her thoughts in an emotional post on Instagram, writing, "The Symphony of Dance tour has only been over for a few days and I still haven’t quite found the words to express my emotions. This tour was truly one of the most fulfilling experiences in my life."

She continued, "When we kicked it off in September, I was on cloud nine; getting to travel and perform with my newlywed husband, doing the most challenging show I have ever done in my entire life. Then December 6th rolled around, and everything came to a screeching halt."

Hough first revealed on Dec. 7 that his wife had been diagnosed with an intracranial hematoma (a collection of blood in her skull) and subsequently underwent an emergency craniectomy. He later shared updates on her condition, including a related cranioplasty operation, which replaced the removed section, a few weeks later.

Erbert said in her post on Thursday that, naturally, there were a lot of hesitations on her part about eventually returning to the tour.

"When there were talks of resuming the tour a few months later, there was so much uncertainty around it for me. But I DID IT!" she wrote. "This tour reignited many parts of me that have been dim for so long. So, for that, I cannot thank everyone who came out to support us on this wild journey enough. I am so grateful to still be here, with you all, doing what I love. Thank you, thank you, thank you."

In February, Erbert shared her own first video update with fans, debuting a new shaved-head look, quipping, "It's a new year, it's a new haircut," while showing off her pixie cut. "A new haircut, a new scar, a new sac of fluid on the side of my face, which is supposed to eventually go away," Erbert continued. "A new skull. But also a new outlook on life. Life is so precious. Spend time with the ones you love. Hold them close because you never know what could happen."

At the time, the duo thanked fans for their support and well wishes and said they'd share further details about their journey when they're ready, with Erbert adding, "I am grateful to be alive and be here to tell my story."

Then, in April, the couple announced that the Symphony of Dance tour would resume in Melbourne, Florida, with Erbert rejoining the tour just four months post-op, thanks to “extensive conversations and tests and results from different doctors” that cleared her to take the stage again. At the time, she told PEOPLE, "I am just so excited to get back out and dance again after having something so traumatic happen."
