Hailee Steinfeld's 'clavi cut' is the sleekest way to style a grown out bob
To bob or not to bob? If you've even slightly considered going for a short hairstyle at some point, you'll be more than aware of the commitment that the undertaking of a bob presents. From the cut to the styling products and recalibrating the delicate balance of your wash days, the choice to opt for a shorter crop is one fraught with decisions.
Enter Hailee Steinfeld's newest hairstyle, the 'clavi-cut', a clavicle-skimming style that perfectly balances between a long bob and a mid-length cut.
The actress cut her past-the-shoulder hair much shorter look last year, embracing a soft waved bob that sat halfway up her neck. Her more recent styles have leaned into voluminous curls and bouncy blow-dries, lending a vintage air to her press tour looks.
But this week, Steinfeld eschewed Old Hollywood glamour for a more modern take on the bob, stepping out at the premiere of Sinners in London with her hair in a sleek, flicked-out style that sat in line with her collarbone.
Offering a softer, lower-maintenance option than the classic above-the-shoulders bob, this flattering length is the perfect style for those wanting to trim a few inches, and conversely, makes for an elegant way to grow out shorter styles.
The beauty of the clavi-cut is that it can be so easily tailored to the wearer. “For fine hair, keep to one length without layers, softening ends for gorgeous movement”, suggests hairstylist and trend forecaster Tom Smith.
“For thick hair, cleverly cutting in long layers underneath the body of the hair creates a beautiful silhouette while preventing the shape from becoming too triangular as lengths grow."
If you have textured or very curly hair, Smith recommends asking your stylist to cut lengths an inch below the collarbone, “to allow for shrinkage". Just be sure to avoid too much shaping around the face; the cut’s impact depends on ends that graze the collarbone. Otherwise, in Smith's opinion, its feature-enhancing qualities are unrivalled: “The clavi-cut elongates the neck and casts very subtle shadows under the cheekbones, creating angles and amplifying the natural contours of the face.”
As for styling, you're spoilt for choice. The clavi-cut lends itself as much to a sleek blow dry as it does to mermaid waves and Steinfeild's on-trend flippy ends. On the subject of which, Kendall Jenner embraced a similarly flicked-out look over the weekend while attending Coachella, wearing her hair in a centre-parted flipped bob.
While the model's bob sits above her shoulders, she demonstrated the versatility of this slick style for all gradients of the cut.
