Yahoo Lifestyle Grammys Producer Speaks Out On Controversy Over Bianca Censori’s NSFW Look
Ye and Bianca Censori’s red carpet appearance at Sunday’s Grammy Awards might have ignited a media firestorm, but according to an executive producer on the awards show, Censori’s ensemble doesn’t appear to have violated the event’s dress code for guests.
Ye, the artist formerly known as Kanye West, returned to the Grammys for the first time in a decade, having been nominated for Best Rap Song for the 2024 hit “Carnival.”
Any buzz about his nomination, however, was overshadowed when Censori, Ye’s wife of about two years, removed her black fur coat to reveal a see-through dress worn with no underwear, giving the illusion that she was nude.
In an interview with People published Tuesday, however, producer Raj Kapoor suggested that Censori was likely given more leeway with her NSFW look because she didn’t appear onstage as a performer. As for the show’s guests, he described their dress code as “artistic black-tie,” noting: “In the music industry, I guess that’s up for interpretation.”
“Obviously there is a dress code for anybody actually performing on the show that we have to adhere to standards and practices,” he said. “But as far as people attending and nominees attending, that would be something the [Recording] Academy would have to answer.”
In the days since the Grammys, Censori’s dress has been compared to similarly sheer looks worn by Rihanna in 2014 and Rose McGowan in 1998.
Still, debate about whether it should be deemed indecent exposure has continued online. According to California state law, a person can be deemed “guilty of a misdemeanor” if he or she “exposes his person, or the private parts thereof, in any public place, or in any place where there are present other persons to be offended or annoyed.”
A Los Angeles Police Department representative clarified to TMZ Monday that the Grammy Awards are considered a private event, and no one from the award show has contacted police with any complaints about Censori’s outfit.
Though Ye lost Best Rap Song to Kendrick Lamar, he’s hinted he and Censori have been relishing the attention their red carpet appearance has received.
“We beat the Grammies [sic],” he wrote in an Instagram story Tuesday before adding, “For clarity/February 4th 2025/My wife is the most Googled person on the planet called Earth.”
