A 'Goonies' Sequel Is on the Way With One Hollywood Icon Already Attached
Almost 40 years after the release of The Goonies, a sequel is in the works. And this time, it’s not just a rumor. Warner Bros. is officially developing The Goonies 2 and has hired on a writer and producers, as reported by Variety.
With the original cast, including Oscar winner Ke Huy Quan and Stranger Things star Sean Astin now all grown up, there's plenty of questions as to what form the sequel will take. While there are still plenty of unknowns regarding the project, here’s everything we know so far about The Goonies sequel.
What is the release date for The Goonies 2?
So far, it appears The Goonies 2 is still in the very early stages of development.
At the Feb. 3 premiere of Love Hurts—an action film starring Goonies original cast members Quan and Astin—neither actor was (openly) aware of the sequel.
As such, not many details have been released, including the timeline to theaters. The website Backstage says most movies take anywhere from one to two-and-a-half years to make. It could be that The Goonies 2 is more advanced in development than we know, but a release date is probably a ways away.
Will Ke Huy Quan be in The Goonies 2?
No official cast has been announced yet for The Goonies 2, but Quan has been open to doing the sequel for years.
“It’s one of the most asked questions in my life,” he told Variety. “I would love for it to happen.”

Will Corey Feldman be in The Goonies 2?
Similar to Quan, Feldman has long been interested in a sequel. He and Sean Astin actually pitched an idea about 10 years ago to original director Richard Donner. At the time, Donner shot the idea down as “too expensive.” He was picky with how he would move forward with a sequel. Unfortunately, Donner passed away in 2021, but the cast remained hopeful the right idea would eventually go into development.
“All I can say is, get us all together,” Feldman said. “Everybody is looking good. Sean’s looking good. Josh [Brolin] is looking good. We’re all looking good still, and we’re all alive. Goonies never say die ... There’s hope.”

What is The Goonies 2 about?
The original Goonies followed a group of kids whose homes were under threat by a property development company. After finding an old treasure map, they embark on a treasure hunt as a last-ditch effort to save their neighborhood.
Although the plot of The Goonies 2 hasn’t been revealed, Donner said he intended it to be “about the characters—more of a film about these people and where they are now,” according to Feldman.
Whether it sticks to his vision or not will be up to the new director, cast and crew.
Who is the director of The Goonies 2?
Since Richard Donner’s passing, the question of who would helm a sequel has floated around; and now that the project is officially moving forward, it needs to be answered.
So far, no director has been tied to The Goonies 2. But there is a big name attached at producer: Steven Spielberg. His company Amblin Entertainment will return to produce, alongside Kristie Macosko Krieger (West Side Story, Maestro, Lincoln) and Holly Bario (Ghost in the Shell, Carry-On, The Girl on the Train). Chris Columbus, the original scriptwriter for The Goonies, will also produce.
Lauren Shuler Donner—the wife of Richard Donner—is set as executive producer. She’s worked on hit movies like Logan (2017), Deadpool (2016), You’ve Got Mail (1998) and many more.
Finally, Potsy Ponciroli has been brought on as scriptwriter. He’s known for Old Henry (2021) and Still the King (2016-2017).
