Goldie Hawn Fans Go Nuts After Catching 'Insane Reference' in Sabrina Carpenter's Grammy's Performance
Fans of Goldie Hawn and Sabrina Carpenter are losing their minds after one eagle-eyed viewer noticed a direct connection between the "Espresso" songstress' Grammy's performance and choreography from the Overboard star's 1978 television special.
One TikToker, who goes by the username @pump_up_the_volume, clocked the "insane reference" before uploading Hawn's version to the social media platform that same night, noting that Carpenter "goes for the deep cuts" when she pays homage to Old Hollywood.
This particular instance stems from The Goldie Hawn Special, a variety hour of show tunes and comedy skits featuring George Burns, Shaun Cassidy, John Ritter and the Harlem Globetrotters.
In the original clip, Hawn wore a slinky, sparkly midnight blue dress with silver chains securing it around the back while singing "Nobody Does It Like Me" from the musical Seesaw. She began at the top of a long set of stairs, slowly making her way down them before disappearing in the middle thanks to some clever set construction and the angle of the camera, eliciting laughter as she popped back into frame and continued making her way down the steps.
Meanwhile, Carpenter began in the middle of a slightly shorter staircase, donning an equally sparkly black jacket over a tuxedo-style leotard. Her physical comedy started in the form of an errant spotlight and a lost cane, but she, too, mimicked Hawn's optical illusion before making it all the way down to the stage.
"i love that there was someone somewhere who got the reference because it flew over my head ngl," one comment read, while another wrote, "Thank you for sharing this!!"
"I love Goldie," they added, while others gushed over Carpenter's style.
"Ughhhhh this is why I love Sabrina," one said.
"She’s been doing a lot of old Hollywood references lately," another fan noted, pointing to "several" recent "fashion choices...literally straight from the Fran Drescher archives."
In fact, as another fan pointed out, the "blue striped dress she wore in the interview before tonight’s performance" was a direct nod to one of Drescher's from The Nanny — and it wasn't the first time.
