This year's Met Gala theme of "gilded glamour" prompted plenty of sparkles, satiny flowing fabrics, and metallic accents.

Here's how to take inspiration from one of fashion's most high profile events, without going over the top.

Three images of guests at the Met Gala, Kim Kardashian in a skin tight cream sequined gown, Gigi Hadid in a padded scarlet coat and dress and Bella Hadid in a black dominatrix style outfit with patterned stockings showing.
Let the Met Gala inspire you to glam up your own wardrobe.

The Marilyn Monroe look

You don't have to drape yourself in a $6.7 million sheer sparkly gown to emulate Kim Kardashian.

The main thing here is the shape - get that right, then add some interesting fabric to give a subtle nod to the Marilyn look.

This Davina Dress, $76.97, from Petal and Pup, gives a flash of skin through the fabric and is a great shape.

Metallic glam

Blake Lively's Atelier Versace gown transformed on the steps of the Met to represent the patina of New York City buildings over time.

While it's unlikely you'll be able to change your dress at an event, you can take inspiration from the metallic sheen of her gown.

This Metallic Lainey Shimmer Sequin Midi Dress, $680, from Phase Eight (available through Next.com.au) shimmers and shines in all the right ways.

Tuxedo with a twist

Kourtney Kardashian's Thom Browne outfit consisted of a long skirt made from a deconstructed jacket, and a cropped dress shirt.

Subverting traditional masculine attire like this can be super chic and edgy.

You can do the same by choosing a traditional suit and giving it a feminine edge, like this ASOS EDITION oversized longline wedding blazer, $180.

Giant puffers

Gigi Hadid's enormous Versace puffer jacket set a precedent for enormous puffers to become seriously cool as we move into winter.

Get the large look with this Nimbus Down Parka, $550 from Sweaty Betty - there's no need to wear it over a corset unless you want to.

Leather Corsetry

Bella Hadid rocked up to the Met in a black Burberry corset dress with a high leg slit, accessorised with lacy tights and a pearl anklet.

If you want to give a nod to her look without going all out, add a corset to leather pants, such as this Lorrin Cropped Corset in Black Leatherette, $69.95, from Showpo.

Glam headwear

Jessica Chastain nailed the gilded glamour look with her Gucci sequinned gown and matching turban.

If you love the idea of a turban, but think it's a bit too much for every day, try a wide velvet headband.

This Armelle headband, $24.95, from Morgan & Taylor, is a great way to add some glam to an outfit.
