How to Make French Toast 10x Better, According to Reddit

French toast holds a special place in our kitchen, thanks to my grandmother’s recipe. It’s a timeless classic—tender, perfectly golden, with just the right hint of vanilla, cinnamon and other secret ingredients. My kids can’t get enough of it, and honestly, I’ve been content keeping it exactly as it’s always been. Why mess with perfection, right?

But then, I was on Reddit and stumbled across a post promising a way to make French toast so much better, and I couldn’t resist diving into the comments. It did look like a great recipe and people seem to love it!

Now, I’m torn between loyalty to Grandma’s recipe and curiosity about this new technique. My kids are the ultimate French toast connoisseurs, so if this new method wins them over, it might just earn a spot in our weekend breakfast rotation. But if it flops? Well, we will call it a fun kitchen experiment! Either way, French toast is always a win in my book and I can't wait to make this new recipe to see what the little critics say! Here's what you need to know to try it in your kitchen.

The Secret Ingredient for Better French Toast

The Reddit post was originally posted in the Old Recipes forum by user @meatzilla1 and it focuses on a recipe for The Invisible Banana French Toast. Reddit sure knows how to reel you in.

After reading through the post, I found a comment that said the recipe was originally published in a 1981 issue of Woman’s Day magazine as part of a mini DC comics cookbook insert. That insert also included recipes like “Mild Mannered Burger,” “Vegetable Robots,” and “Flash’s Quick Apple Crisp” and I honestly want to try them all!

In the French Toast comic, Batman is tasting banana in his French toast, but he can’t see it. This confuses the Dark Knight until faithful sidekick Robin explains that the banana is in the batter, so he can't see it, but he can taste it.

To make this Invisible Banana French Toast, you blend half a sliced banana with one egg and a 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon. Pour the batter into a bowl, drench three slices of whole-grain bread in the batter, then fry them over medium heat until brown (I prefer butter for this). Serve with maple syrup and enjoy!

If you don't want to use whole-grain bread, you can use whatever you prefer, but the whole-grain is supposed to give it a nutty flavor, which pairs perfectly with the banana flavor.

This recipe will give you a light banana flavor, and it's a great solution for using an overripe banana and is quicker and easier than making banana bread.

I would like this better with a dash of vanilla extract, I think, to give it a richer, layered flavor, and I'd dust it with some powdered sugar to make it a little sweeter, but overall this sounds like a fun recipe to try and the history behind it is really fun.

I'll have to give it a whirl and see what my little sidekicks think.
