Freddie Prinze Jr. is giving an update on his involvement in the I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot.

While recently speaking with Entertainment Tonight, the 46-year-old actor revealed that while a deal is still being worked out, he is hopeful about making his return as Ray Bronson, his character from the hit 1997 slasher.

"Negotiations are weird. One week they're going great and the next week they're going awful,” Prinze explained. “We haven't had an awful week so there could be an awful week [coming]. I have no idea but… I think both sides — them and me — are super motivated to get it done”

The sequel is set to be directed by Prinze’s friend Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, who previously wrote and directed the 2022 film Do Revenge, which starred Maya Hawke, Camila Mendes, and Prinze’s wife and actress Sarah Michelle Gellar.

Prinze confirmed that Robinson “was the one to talk to me a year ago before the studio was even talking [and] was like, 'Would you — would you please do this?' "

According to reports from Deadline, Variety and The Hollywood Reporter, Jennifer Love Hewitt — who played Ray’s love interest Julie James in the film — is also in talks to star in the new installment alongside Prinze.

I Know What You Did Last Summer focuses on a group of four friends that must survive a hook-wielding killer that stalks them after they accidentally kill a man at their high school graduation. The original film was directed by Jim Gillespie and starred Ryan Phillippe, Johnny Galecki and Bridgette Wilson Sampras — alongside Hewitt and Prinze.

The original film is based on the 1973 novel of the same name and also included a 2006 reboot and a television series on Prime Video back in 2021. A direct sequel, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, was released in 1998.

Deadline and Variety also reported that Leah McKendrick would be writing the script and Prize confirmed with Entertainment Tonight that he’s “read a script.”

While he didn’t “want to get into character and story 'cause that would ruin it for a lot of people,” Prinze did share if he thought Ray and Julie stayed together after they both survived.

“They went through a pretty traumatic experience,” he said. “If they were able to survive that and stay together they'd be a better couple than me and my wife in real life."
