Yahoo Lifestyle Frank Lloyd Wright’s Son Designed This $6.5 Million SoCal Home Overlooking the Ocean
Though John Lloyd Wright had huge shoes to fill as the second-oldest son of the legendary Frank Lloyd Wright, he still managed to pave his own way as both a successful architect and toy maker before his death in 1972 at age 80. Not only did he invent Lincoln Logs, but he’s also responsible for a multitude of notable early modern structures throughout Southern California, including this midcentury residence in the charming seaside village of Del Mar near San Diego. First appearing on the market last October for for $7.5 million, it’s now been relisted just three months later with a substantially reduced $6.5 million price tag.
Crafted back in the late 1950s and last sold in 1999 for almost $1.4 million, the hilltop home is tucked away on a third of an acre overlooking the Pacific Ocean and boasts a striking saffron-hued stucco exterior. Inside, five bedrooms and an equal number of baths are spread across more than 4,200 square feet of updated living space on two levels marked by plenty of signature elements gleaned from Wright’s famous father—walls embedded with glass blocks, lofty coffered wood ceilings, and seamless corner windows, just to name a few.

Double wood-trimmed and stained-glass front doors open into a lengthy entrance hallway that flows to a great room sporting a living area warmed by a creamy stone fireplace that stretches to the decorative ceiling and an adjacent dining room lined with windows. The kitchen has top-tier Monogram appliances, a breakfast nook with built-in banquette seating and access to a covered patio, while the primary suite is spotlighted by a spa-like bath equipped with a sauna and steam shower.
A particularly eye-catching spiral staircase heads upstairs, where four more bedrooms are accompanied by a bookshelf-clad family room that opens out to a balcony. Per the listing held by Mie Kim of Coldwell Banker, there’s also a large unfinished basement that could easily be converted into additional living space, a gym, an art studio, or a movie theater, as well as a separate one-bedroom, one-bath guesthouse with its own entrance, kitchen, and fireside living area.
