New Shapes flavours have everyone up in arms

Shapes, they’ve been a pantry staple snack in almost every Aussie household for more than 40 years.

Whether you liked pizza, barbecue, cheddar cheese or savoury, there was a Shapes flavour that catered to everyone’s taste buds.

Unfortunately, customers are now turning their backs on Arnott’s Shapes for changing the original recipe they grew up on as a kid.

The biscuit manufacturer announced last month they would be introducing ‘new and improved’ Shapes that will not only be healthier but will carry more flavour.

The new range hit shelves this week and the reaction they got on social media was not what they expected.

One Facebook user said, “The 'new and improved' shapes taste terrible! I am very disappointed that the product I have loved for over twenty years has been destroyed. I can guarantee that I will never purchase shapes again!”

In defense, Arnott’s Shapes replied, “We've made changes to the Shapes flavours as fans have been asking us to make the flavour bigger and bolder.”

“We did explore simply adding more flavour to the biscuits but unfortunately it just wouldn’t stay on! This is why we decided to bake the flavour right inside the Shapes where it couldn't escape, as well as adding a new flavour coating that stuck much better to the biscuit’s surface,” they said.

While flavour falling off the biscuit was an issue for some, others found ways to love Shapes for its flaws.

“I see the logic and I applaud you for it, however I really enjoyed the moment when I licked my finger and pushed it into the corners of the packet to pull it out encrusted with pizza shapes flavouring. I'm missing that moment,” another Facebook user said.

Others took to Twitter to rant their rage, “Wow the new @CampbellArnotts #Shapes are terrible. They don't even taste like barbecue any more. They're too sweet.”

"Can you bring back the old ones? #ArnottsBiscuitsltd," another said.

But feedback isn't all that bad with some loving the new biscuit, "I tried all the new/old Shapes & honestly LOVE the new ones," a Twitter user said.

In response to the public's mixed feelings, Arnott’s Shapes assured customers on Facebook, “We'll be listening to all the feedback fans have and making a decision on whether we keep the new flavours on or not based on how they are received publicly.”

Shapes fans needn’t fear that much, since the original Shapes flavours will still be sold on supermarket shelves alongside the new ones.

Arnott’s said their new crackers have been “tested and trialled extensively,” with committed Shapes fans claiming these are “the most flavourful Shapes ever.”

While the new recipe has improved the biscuits health star rating, it’s hard to say if the fuss over more flavour was really worth the risk after all.

What do you think about the new Shapes?
