The First-Ever Costco with Apartments Is Coming Soon

Soon you may be able to live out your Costco dreams, and I mean that quite literally. It announced last week that the company is set to develop the first-ever apartment complex with a built-in Costco store. The last time Costco shook the world with big news like this was this past spring, when the wholesale grocery store announced shoppers would have to show their memberships in order to purchase pizza, chicken bakes and other foods at the food court.

The Costco apartment development will have 800 apartment units available for rent, with a portion of them designated as affordable housing rentals. Located Baldwin Hills, Los Angeles, both the location and services offered to lower income populations are very much intentional to the community of this neighborhood at large.

"There are a lot of large families living out here that can't afford large housing, so when they go to buy small stuff, they have to spend more money, but when they go to Costco they can buy bulk, and they can save some money," a Baldwin Hills resident said to NBC Los Angeles.

Additionally, Costco will break new ground for more jobs for the local residents. This new Costco apartment hybrid building will also feature a full-service pharmacy and local businesses can opt to have wholesale groceries delivered straight to their doors.

Even though it doesn't directly impact me (at least, not yet?), as a New Yorker, this is surprising but great news. My gut reaction was, "Oh my god, it's like the Barbie dream house for Kirkland Signature lovers." The cost of living in many cities and urban areas in the United States never ceases to increase. Having access to wholesale grocery stores can certainly be a fix, but that's only doable if you're in close proximity to one—which is not always the case for city-dwellers with little access to cars.

Only time will tell if Costco apartments spread across other cities in the country, but historically speaking, it would be a game-changer for members. Just imagine, running downstairs to grab a rotisserie chicken like you would with a local bodega. Being a few steps away from a Costco cake? A Costco connoisseur can dream!
