The first Emily Henry adaptation, “People We Meet on Vacation”, finds its leads

The stars of "The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes" and "My Lady Jane" will play the film's romantic duo.

Emily Henry fans, it's time to meet Poppy and Alex.

On Friday, Netflix shared a video officially announcing the two romantic leads who will star in the film adaptation of the romance novelist's People We Meet on Vacation.

Tom Blyth, who starred as a young Coriolanus Snow in last year's The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Snakes & Songbirds, will portray tender-hearted, homebody Alex, while Emily Bader, recently stealing hearts as the title character in Prime Video's My Lady Jane, will play the more cosmopolitan Poppy.

The novel follows the two former longtime best friends, who used to spend one week of every summer on vacation together. Two years ago, something happened and they haven't spoken since. But when Poppy convinces Alex to take one last trip together (to Palm Springs, CA), she's determined to set things right, even if it means putting all their cards on the table once and for all.

People We Meet on Vacation will be the first of Henry's bestselling rom-coms to make its way to the screen, though all of her novels since 2020's Beach Read have been optioned. Beach Read, Book Lovers, and Funny Story are currently in development as films, while Jennifer Lopez is attached to produce a TV series adaptation of Happy Place.

Henry joined a virtual call with Blyth, Bader, and director Brett Haley (Hearts Beat Loud) to welcome the cast to the project. After Haley and Blyth surprised Bader with the offer to portray Poppy, Henry signed on.

"I'm so excited, you guys," Henry told them. "I have been like kind of an anxious wreck about who would play these characters, and I just truly could not feel any more confident that my readers and then so many more people who don't even know about the book are going to completely, completely fall in love with Poppy and Alex, with you guys playing them."

Bader replied to Henry, calling her casting "a dream come true" and promising to do Henry proud.

Yulin Kuang, a writer on I Ship It who made her romance debut this year with How to End a Love Story, is writing the screenplay. Kuang is also attached to direct Henry's Beach Read.

People We Meet On Vacation is being produced by Sony, but will be released on Netflix as part of a special partnership between the two studios. Further details, including a potential release date, are still to come.
