The ‘Powerpuff Girls’ Live Action Trailer Leaked Cartoon Network

It took 4 years, but we finally have footage from the Powerpuff Girls live-action TV show, and, um, I'd like to file an official complaint because I need to see more ASAP. The leaked Powerpuff Girls live-action trailer is, admittedly, a little wacky, but that won't stop me from being sad about the show's untimely demise!

The Powerpuff Girls trailer, leaked by the Lost Media Busters Twitter account, has wracked up 4 million views in less than 10 hours. Demand, it seems, is still high for a potential live action take on the beloved cartoon.

The series, originally developed by writers Diablo Cody and Heather Regnier, was meant to follow the three super-sisters, now all grown up, as they reunite to fight crime in their hometown of Townsville. A pilot was filmed in 2021 starring Chloe Bennet as Blossom, Yana Perrault as Buttercup, and Dove Cameron as Bubbles, but, much to our collective disappointment, the series was never picked up. “Sometimes things miss, and this was just a miss," said the then network president Mark Pedowitz, per TV Line.

Now that the trailer is out, some fans are saying that they now see why the show never hit the airwaves. The trailer has been labeled “cringe” and “insultingly bad,” with fans commenting their relief that it was canceled. But I disagree. The show would have been a bright light in dark times, especially as TV targeting young adults has become increasingly dark and murdery (see: Riverdale).

Does the show feel like it's trying a little too hard to be in on the joke? Yeah. Is it on the campy side? Hell yeah. Are the special effects laughably awful? Of course they are—this is network television! But that's what makes it so fun. It would be impossible to make a live-action Powerpuff Girls without camp and more than a little tongue-in-cheek attitude. Maybe it wouldn't be for everyone, but I, for one, would have loved to see this version of The Powerpuff Girls on TV—cringe and all!
