Final Fantasy composer Nobuo Uematsu might be officially retired, but he’s still committed to writing the score for FF7 Remake Part 3 – or part of it, anyway. Uematsu made the comments during a conversation with Remake director Tetsuya Nomura on the Square Enix Music Channel, where the composer said contributing to the project’s finale would be an honor.

The news comes a few weeks after Uematsu said he would likely never work on a full game soundtrack again, as he believes he lacks the mental and physical energy to handle the rigors of composition, which can take two to three years of intense work. Uematsu's last full score was for Fantasian, an Apple Arcade exclusive that launched in 2021.

Uematsu and Nomura briefly discussed No Promises to Keep, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth’s main theme – which Nomura said he called their “cash cow” the first time he heard it – and Nomura posed the question of whether Uematsu would return.

“Since you worked on the first and second game in the series, it stands to reason that you have to come back for the third, Nomura said. “Not that we’ve made it official yet, but I’d like to believe you’re a lock for the next title? You’ll do it, right? Just a gentleman’s agreement, maybe? You will come back for the third game, right?”

“It’d be my honor,” Uematsu said in response, before saying he’d kick the process off by taking a vacation.

Uematsu also wrote FF7 Remake’s theme song, Hollow, so if he does return for Part 3, it seems pretty reasonable to assume he’d handle that game’s theme as well.
