Malia Obama Is Going To Harvard

When we first met Malia Obama, she was an adorable teenager standing alongside her father President Barack Obama and now she’s heading for Harvard.

The 17-year-old, who will graduate from D.C.'s Sidwell Friends School this Spring, has set her heart on the Cambridge, Massachusetts university and will start her freshman year in Autumn 2017, after taking a gap year.

"The President and Mrs. Obama announced today that their daughter Malia will attend Harvard University in the fall of 2017 as a member of the Class of 2021," the office of the first lady announced on Sunday.

"Malia will take a gap year before beginning school."

Obama’s eldest daughter has spent the past year touring prospective universities all over the States, including Brown and the University of Pennsylvania.

In a speech last September, Obama encouraged his daughter to be "open to new experiences”.

"Don't go to college just to duplicate the same experience you had in high school,” he said.

“Don't make your decision based on, well, where are all my friends going so that I can do the exact same things with the exact same friends that I did in high school."

"There are a lot of good colleges and universities out there, and it's important, I think, for everybody here to understand you can find a college or university that gives you a great education.”

Obama continued: "Just because it's not some name-brand, famous, fancy school doesn't mean that you're not going to get a great education there. So one is, lower the stress levels in terms of just having to get into one particular school."
