Underwear with tufts of pubic hair, tanks with yellow bruises, sweatshirts and dresses with bumps meant to emulate love handles and full bellies, would you wear garments like these?

Deborah Dax, a student at the Swiss Design Academy Eindhoven, has created a collection of clothing meant to mimic the imperfections people like to hide and avoid.

Her aim, to show that the different scars, marks and other telltale signs of our bodies’ growth and evolution should be celebrated and accepted as part of who we are, as opposed to hidden. She suggests that they are “body decorations,” and by presenting them throughout fashion, she’s subverting our tendency to hide and be ashamed of them. “What happens if those structures become fashion?,” she asks, “would we then like to have them?” Perhaps not surprisingly, a one-piece swimsuit with all over “wrinkles,” is actually quite beautiful, the gathers resemble delicate pintucks or pleats.

Although not in production, Dax’s explorations perfectly fit in with the current wave of #bodypositive bloggers and celebrities, who are embracing their bodies and their imperfections, because they recognise this is what makes them unique. Hopefully in some time this way of thinking will become the norm, and hashtags and movements will no longer be needed.
