Gok's fashion fix

When was the last time you looked in the mirror and felt good about yourself? Really good about yourself? UK fashion stylist Gok Wan is on a mission to change the way women think about their bodies. It’s all about looking hot with what you’ve got.

The flamboyant fashion guru made his mark by giving women the confidence to appreciate their bodies whatever their shape or size. So why are so many women dissatisfied with their bodies?

“Women wake up at 34, 35 and look in the mirror and go, “what’s that?! It’s moved, its changed.’ Women’s bodies change so much throughout their lives and it’s about understanding your body and accepting it.”

Gok is currently in Australia for a 10 day Westfield style tour, where he will bring the latest autumn/winter trends to life and provide expert style tips.

"I love the way Australian women dress, there is definitely a relaxed sense of style."

Having been bullied at school for being different Gok is able to relate to women with self-confidence issues.

“Being gay, mixed race and looking unusual went against me growing up but these are the things which have actually made me successful at my job. I find it’s a good ice breaker when I meet women“.

Style space: Art versus fashion

The talented fashion guru has convinced women all over the UK to strip off in public in the inspirational fashion series ‘How to Look Good Naked’, that shows women how to look fantastic with their clothes on or off no matter what their body shape. So how does he do it?

“It’s about being honest with women and using humour. I will be upfront with people about their appearance but I will also give them a solution and make them feel confident about their bodies again."

So what are the flamboyant stylist’s try at home tips for looking good naked?

1. Pour yourself a large glass of Pinot Grigio and take a big sip
2. Strip your off!
3. Stand in front of the mirror naked
4. Examine all the parts of your body
5. Pull your skin around, have a look at your breasts, size of your nipples, legs, arms, butt
6. Look at how your body has developed or changed
7. Accept what you've got
8. Flaunt it!

Gok refers to the memorable scene in Sex and the City, which he cites as his bible for life, where they are talking about whether you’ve inspected your vagina. "It was a really poignant scene for my generation of females, after all why aren’t we allowed to talk about our bodies openly?"

Gok rules out plastic surgery, “it’s not good for anyone. It’s scary we can go under the knife now and be so invasive with our bodies.”

He doesn’t rule out clothes, after all Gok admits they re-invented his life.

“I gave my first ever makeover to myself when I was 13. It was a huge moment in my life going from the bullied ugly duckling to being accepted again. It enabled me to be more confident and present myself better."

Gok has taken that philosophy and experience and moved it into his everyday world. “I love clothes and fashion and it’s about teaching women that if they do take a little bit more time on their appearance instead of investing all of their time in their family or their job then will feel better about they way they look."

For autumn/winter Gok recommends embracing the Mad Men trend. “The 1950s was an era of fashion where every single female body shape and size was really respected. It was a powerful decade of fashion before it all went very skinny in the 1960s.”

Think mid length pencil skirts, cute cardis, twin sets and big oversized blouses nipped in with a belt. Gok says the 1950s trend will make pears, hourglass shapes and larger figures look “sexy and fabulous”.
