How To Choose The Right Sunglasses For Your Face

We hate to admit it, but sunglass shopping can be a bit stressful at the best of times.

Go against your face shape

This is the golden rule for sunglass shopping. PIck a pair of sunglasses that contrast against your face shape, in order to balance everything out. "There are some exceptions to the rule however, with universal styles such as cat-eye, aviators and wayfarers that look good on almost anyone," they said.

Look at the size of your face

Proportions are key. According to Oscar Wylee, taking a good look at the size of your face could change everything. "Smaller frames generally work better with smaller faces and vice versa," they said. "It’s important to choose a pair of frames that mirrors your face size."

Make sure they're lifted off the face

This is something that is overlooked quite often when people pick a new pair of sunnies and could be making your life in the sun a misery. "Making sure that the sunnies sit properly on your nose bridge and the contours of your face is very important," Oscar Wylee said. "Depending on if you have a flat nasal bridge, or a long, high and narrow bridge, it’s important that the sunnies are lifted of the face."

Compliment your features

Turns out the colour of your sunnies makes a huge difference. "Look for colours that compliment your features, such as skin tone, hair colour and even eyebrow colour," they said. Black is also good for making a big impact.

For heart-shaped faces

Always choose a style that directs attention outwards or downwards. "Choose aviator or rimless styles characterised by a broader forehead, narrower jaw and a more pointed chin. Frames with thin temples or exaggerated bottoms are absolutely lovely for heart face shapes."

For square-shaped faces

Pick oval and rounded rectangle frames. If you have bold features such as a prominent forehead and a strong jawline, you want to choose styles with rounded edges for softening and lengthening your face. "Curvier frames like round, oval, cat eye, butterfly and semi-rimless are perfect to accentuate your eyes and playfully balance your face shape," Wylee said.

For oval-shaped faces

If you have broad cheekbones with a narrow forehard and chin, you are one of the lucky ladies who can pull off just about any look. Choose top-heavy frames and butterfly shapes to compliment your face. "Choose a style that is thicker and darker on the top than the bottom, or a rectangle frame to balance an oval face."

For round-shaped faces

If you've been blessed with a round face, rectangular frames will suit you down to the ground. "Geometric shaped frames and oversized and angular frames will assist in proportioning your face out by giving a longer, thinner look."

For oblong-shaped faces

Oblong face shapes generally have longer faces, with narrow chins and cheeks, so choose oversized or wrap style glasses. "To give the illusion of a smaller face, try oversized or wrap style frames," Wylee said.

Have fun

The most important thing is that your sunglasses suit not only your style, but also your personality. Don't forget to have sun with the colour and shape.
