‘F1’: First 10 Minutes Of Brad Pitt Race Car Movie Revs CinemaCon’s Engines

Apple Original Films might be looking at its first blockbuster in F1 coming out via Warner Bros on June 27.

We’ve been hearing that the movie has been testing well, and even if there’s a bit of hurdle in U.S. audiences not being fans of the sport, the bet is that F1 rallies overseas. From today’s extended look, director Joseph Kosinski and producer Jerry Bruckheimer have delivered something that’s akin to a Top Gun with lots of riveting, cut-the-corner race scenes that outstrip those of James Mangold’s Ford v. Ferrari (no disrespect) and bromance camaraderie.

Pitt’s Sonny Hayes is a Daytona winner who walks away with a $5,000 check. However, in the wake of the excitement of the race, he’s washing his clothes at the laundromat. A Porsche pulls up and out steps Javier Bardem’s suede coat-wearing Ruben. He approaches Sonny, and there’s a banter. “You remind me of a old friend,” says Pitt. They go back and forth. Ruben removes his glasses; indeed it’s Sonny’s amigo. But Ruben is in a pickle: He’s $350 million in the hole and needs an F1 driver. Yes, that’s Sonny.

Warner Bros is about to give the spring break box office a lift this weekend with Legendary’s A Minecraft Movie, which is expected to clock $130M worldwide. F1 is one of WB’s several event films this summer along with Final Destination: Bloodlines (May 16), Superman (July 8) and Zach Cregger’s crazy horror movie Weapons (August 8) — whose footage creeped out the room today. The hope is that these pics will take care of the bigger swings that studio led by Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy has in pricey auteur films at $100M+ apiece: Ryan Coogler’s Sinners, Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another and the recent misfire Mickey 17 from Oscar winner Bong Joon Ho.
