‘Extreme Makeover’ Host Clea Shearer Gets Candid in Emotional Health Update
Extreme Makeover: Home Edition co-host Clea Shearer underwent a double mastectomy in 2022 after getting diagnosed with breast cancer. And recently, she shared an emotional health update with her followers.
On Feb. 18, Shearer, 43, took to Instagram to bring fans up to speed regarding her latest medical scare.
"On Friday night, I developed massive pain in my right breast," she explained. "By the morning, my entire right breast looked and felt sunburned and the pain was awful."
After consulting with her doctor, Shearer said she was prescribed antibiotics to hopefully "knock out whatever was happening."
On Sunday, she still felt unwell but thought she could "push through" because she and her Home Edit co-founder, Joanna Teplin, needed to fly to New York City for a LIVE with Kelly and Mark appearance.
"While we were at the airport, I had to admit that something was seriously wrong and that I needed to cancel the trip," Shearer continued, "It was definitely a lesson in listening to your body, and I’m so glad I did."

By Monday, "things had gotten worse" for Shearer, as her breast was "more red, hotter to the touch, and felt like there was pressure building." She video-called her doctor and considered going to the ER, but ultimately decided to get an ultrasound the next day.
"He also told me to emotionally prepare for needing to go flat," she recalled. "I immediately burst into tears at the thought of losing my breasts twice. I know a lot of women choose that path, but this wasn’t what I wanted. I’ve spent a year and a half in constant surgeries to make myself feel whole again and it was too much to process."
Thankfully, Shearer not only woke up "feeling better" on Tuesday but also learned that her ultrasound came back clear with no fluid detected.

"I (hopefully) can avoid surgery this time," she explained. "The antibiotics seem to be working, and I keep talking to my implant to stay alive like it’s a tamagotchi."
Shearer concluded, "This continues to be a long and often difficult journey, but I’m taking Joanna with me to all future appointments, because this time I got good news. Crying happy tears sure beats the other way around. Sending love 🩷 Clea."
In the comments, friends and fans celebrated Shearer's good news.
