The romantasy novel that took the book world by storm is now on its way to becoming a TV show.

Fourth Wing, from fantasy author Rebecca Yarros, is being adapted by Amazon MGM Studios and Michael B. Jordan's Outlier Society, according to Variety. The book is the first of what Yarros calls the Empyrean novels; in total, the series has (so far) sold roughly three million copies worldwide. It follows Violet Sorrengail, a chronically ill dragon rider, and her boyfriend, Xaden. Together with other students, they attend the Basgiath War College, where they train with a host of other characters in preparation to defend their home, Navarre.

The news of a Fourth Wing adaptation deal is a triumph in more ways than one: until recently, the romance-fantasy genre was dismissed as unworthy of serious attention by veterans of both literature and film. But the people have spoken: Yarros's novels are a global sensation, and we simply cannot wait for the story of Violet Sorrengail to come to life on screen. Ahead, everything we know so far about the Fourth Wing TV show.

'Fourth Wing' Cast and Crew

Yarros first revealed that Amazon and Outlier Society had purchased the TV rights for both Fourth Wing and its sequel, Iron Flame, on Variety back in November 2023.

"Outlier is such a great production company and they have a wonderful diversity and inclusion rider, one of the first companies to have them, which is why I was so joyful, because I knew they would respect the diversity of cast."

But that was only the first piece of the puzzle. Since then, she has confirmed that while she will be an executive producer, she won't be writing on the show. As for the showrunner, that job will fall to Breaking Bad alum Moira Walley-Beckett. Yarros also revealed one piece of information in regards to the cast: Xaden will be a role for a person of color, despite many fans depicting him as white.

"We’re just going to say he’s POC; we’re just going to leave it at that," Yarros told Variety. "I didn’t rise to the bait of a lot of those posts, which I think probably got me some flack, but I knew we were already in development for TV, and I want to make sure that role is open to as much diversity as possible. So I was never going to give the readers my vision because I know that once you give the readers your vision, that’s what they’re gonna stick to. And I wanted to make sure we left it open to as much diversity as possible.”

'Fourth Wing' Release Date

No release date has been announced yet for the TV show, unfortunately, but there is another date you probably want to pay attention to: January 21, 2025, which is when Onyx Storm, the third book in the Empyrean series, finally drops.
