Though she'd been famous for nearly a decade, it wasn't until 2013 that Kim Kardashian made her Met Gala debut, thanks to then-fiancé Kanye West performing.
"Kanye was performing so I wasn’t actually invited; I was just Kanye's plus one. And that was okay with me because I never really dreamed I would be at the Met Ball," she later told Vogue. "I know no one really probably wanted me there at the time."
Despite feeling unwanted at the event, Kardashian got her very first Vogue cover a month later (with West, plus daughter North in the interior spread).
"Part of the pleasure of editing Vogue, one that lies in a long tradition of this magazine, is being able to feature those who define the culture at any given moment, who stir things up, whose presence in the world shapes the way it looks and influences the way we see it," Anna Wintour wrote at the time. "I think we can all agree on the fact that that role is currently being played by Kim and Kanye to a T. (Or perhaps that should be to a K?). As for the cover, my opinion is that it is both charming and touching, and it was, I should add, entirely our idea to do it."
Wintour added, "You may have read that Kanye begged me to put his fiancée on Vogue‘s cover. He did nothing of the sort. The gossip might make better reading, but the simple fact of the matter is that it isn't true."

Was Kim Kardashian at the 2024 Met Gala?
She was indeed. Kardashian has frequently been rumored to be banned from the Met Gala, most recently due to allegedly damaging the late Marilyn Monroe's iconic "naked dress" in 2022, but it's not true: She was back in 2023 and now in 2024 as well.

Kim Kardashian made her Met Gala debut in 2013 with then-fiancé Kanye West. At the time, she was pregnant with their first child, daughter North West.
Kardashian made a splash, but not necessarily in the best way: Her floral gown and matching gloves and heels by West's close friend Riccardo Tisci earned rightful comparisons to couches found in every millennial and Gen X parents' or grandparents' home. While hilarious, the memes hurt her feelings. She later told Vogue, "I was crying the whole way home because I just couldn't believe it."

At her second Met Gala ever in 2014, Kim Kardashian kept it classy and simple in a strapless dark teal Lanvin gown by Alber Elbaz with a black sash and T-strap heels. The theme was "Charles James: Beyond Fashion," and her gown was actually a last-minute change: She previously said it was originally made from leather material and she swapped it to satin at the last minute.

Accessorizing with simple gold cross chains and honey brown contacts, Kardashian's style was simultaneously dazzling and understated.

Kim Kardashian wore a custom Thierry Mugler dress with a very snug corset to the 2019 Met Gala, explaining that the designer's vision was of "this California girl stepping out of the ocean, wet, dripping." She told The Wall Street Journal that she had to practice wearing the "insane" corset, which she said left indentations on her skin and made it difficult for her to breathe.

Kim Kardashian took head-to-toe black literally at the 2021 Met Gala. The Balenciaga look featured a long-sleeve turtleneck bodysuit, a T-shirt dress with train, boots, gloves and a mask.
A source told PEOPLE that Kardashian was set on making a statement, calling the look a "new subculture."
"No logo, no face, but everyone knows it's her," the insider said. "Kanye gave her the courage to push creativity and people's imagination through art. It's the ultimate confidence."
