Emmys host raises eyebrows with bold royals joke: 'Haunt them forever'
Despite not being in attendance, the royal family failed to escape the 2021 Emmy Awards unscathed thanks to a cheeky joke by the evening's host, Cedric the Entertainer.
In one of his speeches, the comedian and actor took aim at key members of The Firm including the Queen and Prince Charles as well as ex-royals Meghan and Harry.
In his opinion, the real-life drama of the past year or two — namely the Sussexes' relocation to the US and their bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey — is far more gripping than Netflix's semi-factual retelling on The Crown.
"As great as The Crown is, it pales in comparison to the real monarchy," Cedric told the crowd of A-listers at the Los Angeles event on Sunday night (local time).
"I mean, that Oprah interview with Prince Harry and Megan, that was the real tea right there, wasn't it?" he quipped.
Cedric went on to speculate about former Suits star Meghan's powers of persuasion over her husband, Prince Harry who stepped back from official royal duties in early 2020.

"Meghan must put it on that boy because he renounced his throne quicker than Eddie Murphy in Coming to America," he joked.
Then, he pivoted back to the couple's tell-all with Oprah back in March, remarking on the claims the Sussexes made against an unnamed member of the royal family who they say raised 'concerns' over their son Archie's skin tone.
"I can't believe they [the royal family] were talking about little Archie. How dark that little baby gonna be.
"They need little Archie! Charles can't dance, who else going to teach them how to TikTok. I can just see it now, baby Archie with the queen, like come on Gammy."
Cedric's royal jests appeared to go down well with the Emmy attendees as well as viewers at home, with many taking to social media to share their praise and support.
"Cedric shading the royal fam tho," tweeted one.
"Cedric the Entertainer making fun of the royals and stanning King Archie LOVE THAT!" added another.
"Cedric joking about the royals, yep that interview is going to haunt that family for all their days. Love that! And that’s on King Archie," wrote a third.
