Easy ingredients substitutes

You might be surprised by what you can substitute for everyday items when baking and cooking. For example, did you know mayonnaise, sour cream and Greek yogurt are interchangeable?  If you need:

  • Eggs, use apple sauce, aquafaba (the liquid from a can of garbanzo beans) or a little pumpkin purée.

  • Heavy cream, add melted butter to regular milk. For a dairy-free alternative, use coconut or unsweetened coconut cream.

  • Buttermilk, add lemon or another acid like vinegar to milk.

  • Brown sugar, make your own with white sugar and molasses.

  • A butter alternative, use coconut oil or olive oil.

  • Citrus like lemons or limes, use vinegar or orange juice to add the same brightness to your recipes.

  • Breadcrumbs, make them out of stale bread. Tear the bread into smaller pieces and put it in a food processor. Then, pulse it until it’s the right texture. If you only have fresh bread, place it in the oven to dry it out first.

Grocery tracker apps

Being aware of what you have in your fridge, pantry and on your spice rack will make it easier to know what you need for your meal. This is where grocery tracking apps can help.   With your input, they can catalog every single box of cereal, carton of eggs, and head of broccoli you have. They can also create a grocery list for you when you run out. If you have an account at your preferred grocery store, some of these apps can link to it and automatically add the items you purchase to your digital pantry. On top of that, they can also help you find recipes to use what you have so you don’t accidentally end up wasting any food because you forgot about that bag of spinach that's now hidden in the back of the fridge.
