Marking Berger’s follow-up to Netflix Oscar winner All Quiet on The Western Front, Conclave follows one of the world’s most secretive and ancient events — selecting the new pope. Cardinal Lawrence (Fiennes) is tasked with running this covert process after the unexpected death of the beloved Pope. Once the Catholic Church’s most powerful leaders have gathered from around the world and are locked together in the Vatican halls, Lawrence uncovers a trail of deep secrets left in the dead Pope’s wake, secrets which could shake the foundations of the Church.
Based on Robert Harris’s bestseller of the same name, the film also stars Stanley Tucci, John Lithgow, Sergio Castellito, Isabella Rossellini and more. Peter Straughan adapted the screenplay. Tessa Ross, Juliette Howell, Michael A. Jackman, Alice Dawson, and Robert Harris produced alongside executive producers Steven Rales, Glen Basner, Alison Cohen, Milan Popelka, Ben Browning, Len Blavatnik, Danny Cohen, Berger, Fiennes, Robyn Slovo, Peter Straughan, and Tomas Alfredson.
In his review of the film out of Telluride, Deadline’s Pete Hammond called it “a papal election thriller that rivals anything a political party could dream up.” Continued our Chief Film Critic, “To put it succinctly in literary terms, this one is a real page-turner. In pure cinematic terms it is a barn-burning thriller. A superbly crafted — in every respect — stunning dramatic achievement, this is the kind of well-regarded, praiseworthy adult drama that used to be a staple for studios but now is an increasingly rare bird.”
