When it comes to looking after skin, Dr Pimple Popper - aka dermatologist Sandra Lee, MD - certainly knows her stuff.

Her viral (and often stomach-churning) pimple-popping videos has seen her amass over 3.6 million Instagram followers and spawn her own reality TV show on US network TLC.

But after the gross-out thrill of watching Sandra obliterate everything from pimples to blackheads and cysts, many viewers are left wondering what they can do to keep acne at bay.

The superstar doc spoke to Yahoo Lifestyle US about her own line of zit-busting products, SLMD Skincare by Sandra Lee, as well as her favourite cheap-and-cheerful products you can pick up at your local chemist.

Because, yes, even Dr Pimple Popper herself gets the occasional pimple.

Every once in a while, our skin needs a bit of a refresh. When it comes to congested pores around the nose and cheeks, Lee turns a tried-and-true classic from Bioré. “Bioré Pore Strips have safely been taking care of pores for over 20 years! Not to mention they are super easy to apply at home,” she told Yahoo Lifestyle.

Like most dermatologists, Lee regards retinol as the Gold Standard of anti-aging skincare. In fact, she considers retinol or tretinoin “the number one anti-aging topical treatment option.”

“Tretinoin is a prescription but the over-the-counter option is retinol and both help minimize fine lines and wrinkles, lighten brown spots and even can prevent the development of skin cancer.” She recommends the top-rated Replenix serum, which is packed with retinol and antioxidants for optimal anti-aging benefits.

Moisturise, moisturise, moisturise - Alastin Restorative Skin Complex, about $288 from Skin Care Solutions Store

“Lotions are lighter and water-based and creams are oil-based, so they’re more moisturising,” explained Lee. Her favourite hydrating ingredient, however, is hyaluronic acid. “It’s hydrophilic and attracts moisture and keeps it in the skin. I like Alastin’s Restorative Skin Complex. I’m especially dry so I love using my SLMD Hyaluronic Acid Serum as my nightly moisturizer,” she added.

Wear sunscreen every day, and reapply - SLMD UV Bounce, $40 from slmdskincare.com

Lee recommends using physical sunblocks with ingredients like Titanium Dioxide or Zinc Oxide if you’re not acne-prone, but the most important thing about sun protection is reapplying throughout the day.

“Many people don’t do this because they have makeup on or don’t like to get that tacky feeling on the hands after applying sunscreen and it may not be convenient to wash hands after,” she explains.

“This is why a product like SLMD UV Bounce, a powdered sunscreen is so important because it can be applied over your makeup and has an easy applicator brush built-in.”
