Dozens of Former Hosts and Cast Members Reunite for 'Les Miserables' Parody on 'SNL50'

For SNL50: The Anniversary Special, we knew the show would be pulling out all the stops, inviting past cast members, hosts and musical guests back to the program to celebrate the momentous night. We didn’t expect that SO MANY of them would be on stage all at the same time performing in an absolutely bananas musical parody of Les Miserables, and what a gift it was.

Revisiting six-time host John Mulaney’s New York musical sketch series (which we got an installment of earlier this season), Sunday night’s edition of the skit brought together a bevy of celebrity talent to take former cast members Pete Davidson and David Spade on a journey through NYC over the decades. Starting in the 1970s, Maya Rudolph and Adam Driver showed up as an anthropomorphic Syringe and Hotdog (it’s as crazy as it sounds) singing about how New York just ain’t what it used to be. And it wasn't not much better in the 1980s either, when Mulaney took the audience to a diner where they were greeted by Nathan Lane who sang a parody of “Hakuna Matata” changing the lyrics to “Cocaine and Some Vodka.” The less-than-family-friendly ditty prompted Mulany to quip, “Wow, I bet Disney is going to be psyched!”

Taking the performance into the audience and into the 1990s, Jason Sudekis and Will Forte showed up as the character performers you’d find in Times Square, giving their best Jean Valjean and Jervert before Kristen Wiig entered as “the one character in Times Square who is family friendly but also a prostitute: the Green M&M.” Sauntering through the audience, Wiig gave her best parody version of “I Dreamed a Dream” before Kate McKinnon put the bald cap back on to reprise her iconic impersonation of Rudy Juliani, singing “I AM throwing away my shot,” alongside Lin Manuel Miranda, the very man Kate was parodying.

You think that’s all? Well there was more! Taking us to the present day, Scarlett Johannson and Paul Rudd showed up in a Little Shop of Horrors spoof about how E-Bikes are plaguing the sidewalks of New York City. “Suddenly E-Bikes, they’re flying around me,” Johansson sang, “They’re up on the sidewalks, but they’re faster than cars.” The whole scene crescendoed in a group “One Day More” group number which brought in Kenan Thompson, Cecily Strong, Nick Jonas, Ana Gasteyer, Taran Killam and more. It really needs to be seen to be believed.
