Over the last few years, lip liners have resurged in popularity—in many ways due to the return of all things Y2K and an emphasis on nostalgic beauty trends. It's quickly become the makeup item to have in your purse at all times (along with a good lip gloss, of course). While lining your lips is a makeup technique that is relatively self-explanatory and customizable to your personal preferences, there's a new trend in town going viral made specifically for those with double-lined lips.

For those with a noticeable secondary line around the lip border—aka double-lined lips—the road to getting a full pout is typically met with its set of struggles. Which border should you *actually* be putting product on? The boarder where the color stops or the boarder where the fullness stops? And how do you prevent looking straight out of The Joker? TikTokers think they found the answer.

As Steve Kassajikian, head of global artistry for Urban Decay explains it, "The best way to tell if you or someone else has this naturally is if you were going to draw an outline of the lip, you hesitate on whether you should follow the inner or outer path." He notes celebrities like Rihanna and Gigi Hadid as good examples of this.

What Is the Double-Lined Lip Trend?

Applying product on your lips when you have double-lined lips requires a different approach than the traditional method of just swiping it on as normal. But a new TikTok trend that involves creating a U-shape instead of following the natural curvature of your lips is the solution people have been looking for.

How to Double-Line Your Lips

So, how do you apply lip liner when you’re working with double-lined lips? The trick starts with how you approach the bottom lip. Instead of dragging the liner all the way to the corners, focus on concentrating the product in a soft U-shape that curves slightly inward. This technique helps build the product toward the center, creating a softer, more diffused effect that blends the two lines seamlessly. By blurring out those double lines, you end up with a more natural look that feels intentional rather than sloppy.

As for the top lip, that is subject to your preference. People have opted to overline the cupid's bow to get a more plumped effect and then smudge for a seamless finish. The most important part after you line your lips is to remember to only apply lipstick or gloss inside the areas you line instead of putting it on all-over.

As is often the case when it comes to makeup, there is no one-size-fits-all, just suggestions.

Kassajikian shares that another method you can use to create a full pout for double-lined lips is to keep the focus on the cupid's bow and the center of the bottom lip when lining, so the lips look poutier. "Draw the line to be more narrow and then smudge outward to fill in additional space in the outer border," he explains.

What is the Benefit?

According to the experts, this is a great method to use in your own routine if you have double-lined lips. Kassajikian shares that it works because the smudging of the inner line outwards allows you to create a new lip line around your natural lip shape and gives the illusion of a bigger pout.

"The shadow effect of a blurry line makes the lip seem more natural and not look overdrawn," he adds. "Additionally, the neutral shaded gloss creates a negative space, tricking the eye to look at the outline to identify the lip shape."
