Dog Missing for 69 Days Has Most Joyful Reunion with Dad

The health and safety of our animals is a top priority for pet parents. We do our best to feed them healthy foods, give them plenty of exercise, and keep them secure in our homes and yards. But sometimes, no matter how hard we try, things happen.

This missing dog's story is an animal lover's nightmare. Thankfully, it has a happy ending and provides us with many reasons to never give up.

Hear the story of hope in a video from August 31:

If dogs could talk, Zip would have many stories to tell. His resilience is truly inspiring. It's difficult to imagine what it must've been like for him to spend 69 long days in the woods. As pet parents can only imagine, it must've been incredibly heart-wrenching for his Dad to go to bed at night and wake up each day without him. After Zip went missing, he enlisted the help of The TRAPRS (@thetraprs), and he and his running friends spent hundreds of hours hiking in Austin's vast Barton Creek Greenbelt to find him, but to no avail. However, knowing this athletic dog was conditioned to run 15 to 20 miles a day with his Dad, they didn't give up.

Miraculously, on day 69, Zip entered the trap set up for him, and it worked! While he may have lost a substantial amount of weight and is covered in scrapes and scabs, he's safe now. His Dad was overjoyed to see him, and it didn't take long before this good boy covered his face with kisses. It's safe to assume this exhausted dog hadn't slept much in the last two months and seemed to fall asleep in his father's arms. He's a beautiful example of why we should never lose faith, even when things appear hopeless.

Resources to Find Lost Dogs

  1. Social Media. Using local social media groups on Facebook, Instagram, and NextDoor can help you connect with other animal lovers willing to help with your search. Printing out flyers and posting them in your neighborhood can also be beneficial.

  2. Shelters. Contacting area shelters and rescues can help you be reunited with your beloved pet quickly, should they be located.

  3. Databases. Petco also has the Lovelost national database, which uses facial recognition to help connect lost pets that have been found with their families.

If your dog ever goes missing, a collar with your address and phone number can help facilitate a quick reunion. Having your dog microchipped is also essential; this way, a veterinarian or shelter can scan the chip and locate the family if their identification is lost.

It's inspiring to know that this dog will sleep in a warm bed at home tonight. For him and his father, it will probably be the best night's rest they've had all summer.
