'Do not eat': Confronting photo of Costco meat disturbs people online

A woman has questioned whether or not the meat she purchased from a Queensland Costco is safe to eat after finding mysterious spots on the product.

The shopper shared a photo of the meat she had purchased from Costco, showing five clusters of something unknown on the piece of lamb.

“I bought this lamb deboned roast from Costco North Lakes on Saturday, and found five of these in it,” the woman explained on Facebook.

“Can anyone tell me what it is and is it safe to eat still?”

The post attracted over 160 comments, with many people disturbed by the spots and urging the woman not to eat the meat.

“My father was a butcher and I used to help him in the shop. I've never seen anything like that in meat,” one person said.

“I wouldn't eat it and I suggest you take it back.”

Many offered their thoughts on what the spots could be – and some suggested the animal was unwell prior to slaughter.

“Hubby is a butcher, he says DO NOT EAT, take it back, looks like cysts/tumours. Could be a grass seed that has festered up, but insists you do not eat it,” one person said.

Many people suggested they could potentially be cysts.

“It's a cyst. The fact that someone boned that and then wrapped it is really disgusting,” another commented.

Master butcher David Connery confirmed to Yahoo News Australia the weird spots are in fact cysts and said this was poor on behalf of the butcher who cut the meat.

“I would never let that get past,” Mr Connery said, adding the meat could have been salvaged if the cysts were removed and the meat was properly cleaned.
